MisfitsSummary: Kev introduces Janna to Maya.
Notes: Is it bad that this was the very first thing I thought of doing when I saw the prompt? I’m not a trekkie by any means; I’m in the Star Wars camp (as are Kev and Janna), but the boyfriend loves Trek. He thought the story was cute / totally silly when I pitched it to him.
When Kev opened the door to let Janna in, she could tell that hell was going on inside. Kev’s young daughter who he wanted to introduce Janna to, was running up and down the hall screaming at the top of her lungs and Kev looked like he had been trying to calm her down but hadn’t succeeded. The look of exhaustion made her smile; he had probably gone through a lot worse when he had babysat her and her brothers than now that he was a stay-at-home dad.
“Maya!” He called her name in a strict tone that Janna remembered him using in the classroom. “Here’s someone I want you to meet.”
Maya skidded to a halt in front of Janna, almost bumping into her and then looking up innocently at Kev who rolled his eyes but smiled, obviously unable to resist the child’s inherent charm. It made Janna feel warm and cozy inside, picture her father with that look on his face when she had been Maya’s age so many years ago.
Janna went down to her knees so she’d be able to look Maya in the eye. She had Lara’s grey eyes, something Janna hadn’t suspected. The little girl reminded her so much of Kev, with her shock of black hair and a small copy of his usual smile on her lips. “I’m Janna. Nice to meet you.”
Instead of introducing herself, Maya lifted her small hand, palm facing Janna and spread her fingers, including her thumb, while parting them between ring finger and middle finger. “Live long and prosper,” she said ceremoniously and Janna looked to Kev who was watching with his arms crossed over his chest, trying to look serious but also close to laughing.
Unsure of what to do, Janna mimicked Maya’s hand gesture which she recognized as the Vulcan salute even though she had never seen anyone actually do it in real life, finding that it wasn’t as easy to part her fingers like that as she had always thought it was.
“You have to say, peace and long life,” Maya whispered and Janna did as she was told, trying hard to make herself sound serious and sober as Maya had. Apparently pleased with Janna’s performance, Maya ran off again and Janna burst into laughter as soon as the girl had disappeared around a corner.
“Your two year old daughter is a trekkie!” She managed between fits of laughter and Kev pouted. “You’re such a bad father.”
