MisfitsSummary: Wes and Lynn leave for their road trip!
Notes: The song reminded me of those two at the time of the road trip and things went from there.
They had snuck off in the early morning hours, not taking much but the most necessary equipment and clothes that were now safely stored in the big trunk of the old, battered, green Ford Explorer that would serve as their ride.
Lynn felt tired even though she had gone to bed early the night before. She hadn’t been able to sleep; the conversation she had had with Kev replaying in her mind over and over again. She had asked him to come along despite knowing that he couldn’t, that Lawson almost hadn’t allowed Lynn to go and the boss had made it clear that he disliked Kev and wouldn’t let him take a few days off for what he considered to be a stupid, pointless road trip.
Lynn hadn’t been sure why she had to go but Kev had begged her to, saying that someone needed to keep an eye on Wes and that was reason enough.
“Do you know where we have to go?” Lynn asked as she let herself sink into the shotgun seat. She had decided that it was wiser to let Wes take the first driving shift since he was fully awake and full of energy.
“South.”
“South? How about a more detailed way description?”
“No need to, we have to go south for a while and then we can get a map.” Wes paused, then looked to his partner. “You know my grandmother isn’t dying and that we’re not going to go home so I can say goodbye, right?”
Lynn nodded. “Of course I know. That’s the cover story for Lawson but that’s not as important as actually knowing where we have to go, you know?”
“For now, we’ll follow that car in front of us.” Wes pointed to a silver Passat. “At least as long as they go the same way we want to go.”
Lynn sighed, already regretting having agreed to come along.
