Summary: Isaac Prowse doesn’t understand ultrasound.
Notes: No time for writing today, so have some month-old fluff! Man, that sounds unappealing…

“Here we are,” the technician said with a smile, ultrasound pad rubbing over the clear, cold gel on Adele Prowse’s pregnant belly. “There’s the baby. See it? There’s the head...”

“Fuck,” Adele said, eyes looking like they were about to fall out of her head. She looked towards her husband, for once seeming totally at a loss. “Holy fucking shit!”

Isaac tilted his head, gazing at the screen uncertainly and vaguely taking a hold of his wife’s hand to stop her from swearing some more.

“What am I looking at?” he asked after a moment.

“Inside my belly, obviously,” Adele said fondly. Isaac leaned back and tilted his head the opposite way, brow furrowed, not seeming convinced in the least.

“I’ve seen inside bellies,” he said. “They’re not so... blue...”

“It’s not exactly-...” Adele hesitated, and then laughed weakly.

“Er, would you like to know the gender?” the technician asked with a helpful smile. Adele turned to her.

“Yes, thank you,” she said, oddly cheerful. After several months of pregnancy, Isaac felt haggard from her mood swings and demands. He looked tired and rumpled. Adele, on the other hand, was a picture of perfect health: her skin glowed pleasantly as it hadn’t done before and her slate-blue eyes were bright.

“Determining the sex of the baby?” Isaac asked, sitting up. “What sort of machine is this?”

“Jesus Christ,” the mother-to-be leaned back against the pillows and rolled her eyes. She then turned to the rather mystified-looking technician sat next to her. “Don’t worry about him. He’s not from ‘round here. They don’t care much for education where he’s from, know what I mean?”

“Shush,” Isaac grumbled lightly.

“Well, I can happily tell you,” the technician said, clearly just wanting to bypass what Adele had just said, “that the baby’s a girl!”

Adele turned to Isaac with the most stupid grin on her face and was met with a look of confusion.

“What?” she demanded.

“That can’t be right,” he said weakly. “Boys. Prowses always have boys. That’s the way it goes.” He looked at his wife, who didn’t look impressed. “I’m serious! I had two brothers-my father had six! It’s a Prowse thing!”

“Looks like your genes just became my genes’ bitch,” Adele said smugly.

The technician looked between the couple and decided it was probably best not to interrupt. The technician would be correct. Adele sat up slightly, seized her husband’s collar and pulled him close to land a delicate kiss on the tip of his nose. Then she smirked.

“You know all about being under my control, don’t you, sweetheart?”

“Ada...”

“I know, I know.” Adele leaned away from him. “A time and a place.” Her gaze snapped over to the technician. “So, are we done here? Let’s wrap this up. Print us a couple of pictures, please-maybe my pet chump will be able to understand them better at home.”

After the technician had cleaned Adele up and was carefully turning off the machines and having four images printed, Isaac leaned forwards on the hospital bed and touched his nose to the roots of her hair as he pressed his lips to her forehead.

“You’re a very evil young lady, do you know that?” he asked, smiling softly. Adele could feel his lips curving against her face.

“I’m so sorry,” Adele purred, tilting her face upwards and closing her eyes. Her eyelids were delicate and looked almost translucent, free of make-up for once. Her front teeth clamped over her bottom lip for a moment. “It’s the way I was born.”

Isaac breathed deeply, drinking in her perfume one more time before seating himself again.

“Maybe procreation wasn’t such a good idea for you...”

He didn’t mean it: he already loved his unborn daughter indescribably, even though she was apparently a set of silver blobs joined by fuzzy threads against a backdrop of shale blue-grey.
