If Rayne could have dealt with loneliness better, it would have never happened. But Angie was gone, and Sarah was out, and the idea of staying in an apartment that was far too empty, with a bed that was far too cold made her nauseated. She did the only thing she could think of. She went to Andy, scotch in hand. He hadn’t asked questions, and Rayne couldn’t describe how thankful she was for that. She was supposed to be strong, and the fact that she was breaking now after Angie had been gone for so long as it was made her feel ashamed.
Rayne didn’t ask questions about why Andy had been so ready to drink as well. He looked as heartsick as she felt. Instead they talked about anything else; work, roommates, siblings, homes, pasts. Presents were too painful and futures were too uncertain to come up in spoken conversation, but it was there in their eyes, and their body language, and their thoughts the most. Eventually the scotch disappeared, and Andy stumbled to bed while Rayne stared after him and tried to figure out what to do now. In the end she followed him, because it was better than any other option she had.
Crawling into the bed beside him, it only seemed natural to wrap her arms around his waist and press her face against his neck. Andy held her just as tightly, and for a moment it was both familiar and horribly different, and Rayne couldn’t help but cry. He kissed her because he couldn’t think of anything else to do. It went from there, but never became heated, or passionate, or romantic.
They clung to each other because they had no one else to turn to; because they would drown if they didn’t.
