“I really don’t like this idea,” Belial hissed into the phone. “I’m not even inside yet and people are staring.”
“It’s not that bad,” Sable said calmly.
“You’re not even here! You’re in the safety of a hotel room! You fucking brought me to this strange place and then abandoned me-“
“I didn’t abandon you. They’re probably only looking at you because they find you attractive.”
Belial sighed. He had bought a new dress for the occasion. It was a bit more poofy than the tight vinyl outfits he liked, but he knew he looked amazing. “Maybe,” he said. “So what am I looking for?”
“A guitar.”
Belial blinked. “You dragged me here for a fucking guitar?”
“The Cataclysmos, actually.”
“No!” Belial yelled, ignoring the confused stares from the people around him. “No fucking way! You get over here and pick me up right now!”
“Relax, no one there knows how to use it to its full potential. You should be fine.”
“Fine,” Belial said, walking into the club. “But all of my books are with you, so I’m leaving if anything happens.”
He hung up and sat at the bar. Great, he was in a completely unfamiliar dimension (and point in time) to search for a civilization-destroying guitar. Just wonderful. Well, at least he’d be a pretty corpse if something happened.
“Hey there.”
Belial glanced over at the man next to him. The newcomer was wearing a pinstriped suit with expensive-looking sneakers, and had blonde hair with the occasional pink streak. It was an odd combination, really. In any other situation, Belial would have said something snarky about the outfit, but he still wasn’t entirely sure how this place worked.
“Hi,” Belial said, eyeing the man suspiciously.
The man smirked and looked Belial up and down. “Has anyone ever told you that you’re gorgeous?”
Has anyone ever told you that you’re corny? Belial thought. “Yes, actually. But thank you.”
“No, thank you.” Much to Belial’s disappointment, the man took the empty seat next to him. “I’m Tate. And you are…?”
“That’s a secret.” Belial winked. He wasn’t planning on taking this anywhere, but he was a natural flirt.
Tate laughed. “I like that,” he said, resting his hand on Belial’s thigh. “Well, my secret, would you like to take this conversation someplace more private?”
“You work quickly, don’t you?” Belial stood up. Things were getting just a bit too skeevy. “Sorry, I‘m not interested.”
Tate stood up as well. “That’s a shame,” he said, pulling Belial against him. “I was getting pretty bored with this place, and I just figured that you were, too.”
Before Belial could decide between breaking Tate’s jaw or tearing his eyes out, something poked him in the hip. Something rather large, in fact. Holy shit, I didn’t know they made humans that big, Belial thought. Wait, I can’t. I’m busy. But it’s been so long…
“Maybe for a little bit,” Belial said, pushing Tate off of him. “Emphasis on little, though. I’m kind of doing something.”
Tate smirked again. “Oh, you will be.”
“Belial, where the hell are you?”
Belial hopped around the room on one foot, trying to get his other shoe on. “I’ll be back soon, okay?”
Sable scoffed. “You ran off with some guy, didn’t you?”
“Sable, he was huge!”
“Oh. Well, obviously, that changes everything.”
Belial brightened. “See?”
“No. We’re here for a specific reason and you go off with some random person-“
“Oh, come on, it’s been ages-“
“You slept with Alain just a few weeks ago! Oh, wait, but you were drunk, so it doesn’t count, right?”
Belial growled and snapped the phone shut as he opened the front door. There was a thud behind him before a naked Tate half-ran, half-fell across the room. “Please,” Tate panted. “Don’t leave, please, I-I need you…”
“Look,” Belial said, smiling sweetly. “It was…cute, but I really have to go.”
“No! You’re perfect-“
“I know.”
“-And I swear, I’ll give it all up if you stay. The booze, the drugs…okay, maybe not all of the drugs…”
“Look, to be blunt, I don’t care.” Belial headed out the door.
“Wait!” Tate stuck his head out the door, staring wide-eyed at Belial’s retreating form. “At least tell me your name!”
Belial stormed down the dark street. He was really starting to hate this world. Of course, Sable wasn’t helping-
A hand reached out and pulled Belial into an alley. He yelped, pulling away from the hand. In the dim light from the sidewalk, Belial could see a hooded figure.
The figure was holding the guitar.
Without thinking, Belial screamed. Windows shattered, car alarms went off, and the figure dropped to its knees, covering its ears. Belial ran down the street, desperate to get away from the alley. Sable was going to chew him out later, but he didn’t care.
Belial rounded a corner at top speed and slammed into another person. “Whoa!” a voice said, catching the librarian. “You okay?”
Belial quickly jumped backwards, ready to strike…but took one look at the newcomer and changed his mind. I don’t know what it is about this world, but I think I’m in love. “Yeah…thanks.”
The other man smiled and adjusted his glasses. “You were going awfully fast,” he said. “Is everything alright?”
“Oh, sure.” Belial smiled and tried to hide a blush. “At least, now it is.”
“That’s good.” The man nodded. “Be careful, okay? There’s been some weird stuff going on lately.”
“Would you mind walking me back?” Belial stepped closer to the man and hugged a tattooed arm. “I’m…not from around here.”
“Oh! Uh…Sure.” The man laughed. “So...where do you want to go?”
Right then, a black sports car sped up to the curb in front of them. The driver’s side door opened and Sable stepped out. “Are you alright?” he asked, glaring at the pair.
“Yeah,” Belial answered, letting go of the man and putting his hands on his hips. “No thanks to you.”
“Good. Get in.”
The tattooed man looked at Belial. “Is this the guy you were running from?” he asked.
“Stay out of this,” Sable growled.
“Look, I just-“
Sable glared at the man. “Go home.”
Belial scoffed as the man turned stiffly and walked down the street. “Why do you always do that?” he asked, his voice going high. “I’m having fun for once and you just want to ruin it!”
“Will you please get in the car?” Sable asked, exasperated. “The humans are staring.”
With an angry sound, Belial stomped to the other side of the car and got in. The two of them were silent for a long while before Belial muttered, “Renaissance would have let me stay.”
