"I love him, Mom," Rebecca says, her voice very tight.
They do not yell, in her family. They do not fight, or scream, or raise their voices in any way. Everything is very polite, very restrained, and sometimes Rebecca feels like punching someone.
"But, darling," her mother says, putting down her glass, "he's not really our sort, is he?" She's using her 'let's be reasonable now' voice. Rebecca hates it.
"I don't care," she says. "I love Frank, and I am going to marry him."
Her mother sighs, near-soundless. "If you must, dear."
"I must," she snaps, and walks out.
