A door hinge squeaked somewhere nearby, cutting the silence like a knife. The little girl cowered in her bed, immediately recognizing the sound. It was Him.
Again.
A cold disembodied voice whispered “Ready for me, sweetheart?”. The darkness surrounded her like a tomb. She couldn’t move.
He was coming for her.
Shannah woke with a start, trembling. It took a few moments to realize that he wouldn’t be coming for her. Not this time.
Never again.
