Cheap Reida humor to fill out the 1.5k for the day. I think this was Marty's idea originally.

Finding Reida seated in the grass frowning at a boot that was still occupied by a foot and half a disembodied leg, Kairn wasn’t really sure opening his mouth was the best idea, but he did it anyway.

“The hell have you got there?”

“A failure,” Reida said, tossing the whole thing on the ground.

“Okay.” Kairn scratched his head. “But a failed what, exactly?”

“Earth spell.” She grabbed the toe of the boot and tipped the sole his way so he could see the lines drawn over it. “See, I thought with the right forms I could make boots that would allow instant transportation from one place to another. You’d just step and activate them.”

Kairn’s jaw dropped. “You’re not telling me that… that-” he waved at the limp leg and his stomach turned “-was alive, are you?”

“Nah,” said Reida. “Well, I mean at some point he was, but not when I found him.” She frowned. “I wonder if that would help, having a live subject, I mean it’s not as if a construct knows what it’s activating-”

“Reida!”

“Oh, don’t go getting your skirts in a bind. You know Berwyk wouldn’t let me.”

Kairn shuddered at the thought anyway. “So…” He eyed the limb a moment. “How’s it work? Or how is it supposed to work anyway?”

“Well,” said Reida, lighting up at the chance to explain her new endeavor. “The idea was that my little construct friend here would take a step, activate the mark, and zap himself right to the bottom of the gully.” She gestured over the edge behind her. “And he did. Well, the part of him that took the step did anyway. The other leg-” she picked it up and gave it a toss for dramatic emphasis “-not so much. You know,” she added, peering down the embankment. “I wonder if there’s just a leg down there or if his body made it too.”

Kairn decided he didn’t dare look, even if it was just a construct. “You mean you don’t know?”

Reida shrugged. “Well, the whole thing just sort of went poof. And then there was this leg. For all I know he had a bad knee and it fell off. It really is one of those things you need a living specimen for.”

“I, uh, suppose then maybe we just won’t ever know.”

“Hmph.” She pried the boot off the shriveled foot. “Got a use for half a leg?”

“No,” Kairn said, hastily.

“I suppose I’ll let the rest of him have it back then,” she said and chucked it over the ledge. Kairn cringed at the distant thump. “If the rest of him is even down there.”
