Summary: Geran prepares his attack.
Notes: To my shame, I have never actually thought about the details of how this went down before, but once it occurred to me, it flowed. Even if I don’t have a chance to explain all of it in the story, it’ll be nice to have just for reference.
(Okay, so, switching gears for a bit here. This story is one I've been working on since high school and which is currently on its fourth and hopefully final draft. I was working on another piece which is basically a rewrite of the prologue, and wanted to post that first, but it's taking some time so you get two backstory drabbles I've been working on instead and that third one will come later. Constructive criticism for anything I write for this story is welcome and appreciated, since I'm trying to hammer out its weaknesses.)
The walls separating his reality from the others are thick, but have tiny holes that he can see if he looks carefully enough. These holes are few, and they are hidden in places no sane person would think to go-lurking in dark, supposedly creature-ridden caves, hanging just off the edges of high cliffs, or hiding behind large rocks in the middle of long, empty plains that have nothing else in them as far as the eye can see.
Though they are invisible to the human eye, he has noticed that the creatures possess an ingrained awareness of them, and he has learned to harness that ability for his own use. He keeps a mirror in his chambers for that very purpose-to see things that he cannot really see. For some time now, he has used it to find the holes and look through them.
It takes him months to find the right one, and during that time, his plan slowly comes together, like the many colored threads that comprise the tapestries in his halls. It is a risky plan, but as long as the resources he needs are barred from him in his own world, it is his only option. He is not willing to wait until he can obtain access to something closer. Ironically, the creatures he will use to carry out this plan are far easier to capture than children are.
At last, he discovers the perfect target, and everything falls into place from there.
Through the glimpses he has obtained of this new world, he has seen the kinds of toys children play with, and the amount of stores devoted to their sale. He decides that such toys would be the perfect lure and proceeds to plan their construction.
He has not yet mastered conjuring, and the transmogrification spell he will use instead will take enough out of him that he will have to sleep overnight before he can finish the lures and the tracking charms that will complete the plan, but at last, the five creatures he has captured will be put to good use. Five should be enough, if everything goes according to plan.
Once he has sent them on their way, the lures will take care of the rest. All he has to do is wait.
