Summary: Mia asks Tim a serious question while they study. No really! Takes place while she's at the monastery as a child.
The library was quiet in the early afternoon as Mia settled into an overly large chair, holding an equally large book in her lap. Timothe sat nearby, glasses pushed up his nose every minute or so by an errant finger. Mia had snuck a blanket out of the dormitory and was wrapped in it, despite the near proximity of the fireplace. She could see Tim's breath. He flipped a page. She glanced back down. The book was open to a chapter that she was supposed to be reading for the Bishop's special class but she couldn't find the focus yet.
"Hey Timothe?"
The older boy sighed in annoyance and glanced up briefly, "What, Mia?"
"Do you know anything about the Shadow? Will we ever learn anythinga bout it? I mean, all we ever hear is 'Light this' and 'Holy light' that."
Tim frowned at her, "It's forbidden magic, at least until you're ordained. And it's dangerous magic, Mia. You shouldn't even be thinking about it."
She stuck her tongue out at him, "Well, what if I already knew shadow magic?"
He finally seemed to lose interest in the book and focus on her, but his finger remained to hold his spot on the page. "You already know how to use it? Where did you learn?"
"On my own, before I ever came to school."
"Well, don't use it. The wrong spell could hurt you as much as help. That's what I've been told at least. Stop thinking about it and forget that you know anything. We're just students. We don't know enough yet." And to emphasize his point he bent his head back down and pulled a candlestick closer for light, nose nearly touching the page as he read.
Mia drew in a deep breath and sighed. She turned to her book, but the words on the page didn't seem to hold as much allure as they had before.
