Summary: Jamie has to pick up a kid who is under his jurisdiction.
Notes: Stanton is a minor minor character of Jamie’s future story while Bram is a major minor character you might have seen hinted at before. Jamie is the sheriff of a commune that clashes with the next town’s local police every once in a while.

Bram looked away from the police officer whose name tag said L. Stanton. There was no point in telling the man whose mouth kept moving way too fast for the boy to be able to follow anything, especially with the man not keeping his face in a position where Bram could look at his lips.
He knew that he should just tell Stanton what was going on but he’d rather Stanton just give up and call the commune’s sheriff to come down and pick Bram up. It would get him out of quite some trouble - Jamie always did.

Jamie looked at the boy for a second before turning to Stanton. “You said he didn’t answer any of your questions?”
Stanton shook his head.
“Did you look at him while speaking?” Jamie was quite familiar with the policeman’s habit to look away when talking to someone.
Stanton repeated the gesture.
“Well, that’s it. He has no idea what you’re saying if you don’t.”
“What does that mean?”
“The boy - Bram - is deaf and being overly stubborn and refusing to tell you. He’s not comfortable with telling people. So can I take him with me and deal with it myself?”

“That Harley guy, I like him,” Stanton said when the commune’s sheriff and the boy had left the station. “He really knows what he’s doing and even if he doesn’t exactly have the same rights as us, he still knows how to keep those people up at the commune at bay.”
“He has to,” Borne said with a shrug. “After all, these people cause trouble left and right.”
Stanton shook his head. “No, I like everyone who makes my work easier and Harley does. He’s one of the most professional guys I ever met and he doesn’t even have training.”
