“Jake, I’d like you to meet, Glenna.” Kathy introduced.

Glenna was also a freshman, and being one, she was new and shy and still afraid about what other people might think of her.

Jake stared at her, the pretty face, and dear hazel eyes. She was slender, with blonde curls. Her smile was precious, so lighthearted and so real. He hadn’t seen one since Maxene left him. He hadn’t been seeing anything that lovely nowadays.

“Hi, my name’s Jake,” he shook hands with her. He glared at Kathy for a minute, asking for some valid explanation.

“Kathy?”

The 6th grader shrugged. “Oh, nothing. Just thought you might need a friend. It’s been driving me mad keeping you company. People are getting the wrong idea. And I should say, Maxene isn’t happy about it either.”

“As if she ever cared,” Jake said as he rolled his eyes. It was as simple as that, actually. He knew she wouldn’t care even if he jumped off a cliff. But he still hoped, deep down, that she did.

Kathy cleared her throat, walking away. “It’s best you two get acquainted.”

“Hi Glenna! I haven’t seen you around here before. Did you transfer from another school? Or was I just blind to not notice you?”

She blushed lightly, her face flushed a little. “Well, no. I’m in most of your classes.”

And Jake was stunned. He really was blind. He managed to place a smile on his face and head back to the hallway.

Jake and Glenna went to the homeroom and found that everyone else was busy getting the desks cleaned up.

“Grab a broom,” Mr. Cole instructed as they entered, “we have pests in our room.”

Jake took one and gave Glenna the trashcan. Misty the room seemed because of the dust flying almost everywhere, that didn’t stop Jake from looking past the room to the other end of it.

Maxene was sweeping, a handkerchief covered her nose. She sneezed often, for he knew she was allergic to dust. But she had new friends now. She didn’t need him.

But someone did. And that someone was Glenna. A timid person needs a little boost in their life.

So Jake decided, Glenna needed him more than Maxene ever did. Max was a Rice in the making. She had every ability and possibility to be a star because she belonged to a fine family.

Although he wasn’t sure yet about Glenna, but he had a feeling Glenna would be a better friend that his previous one.

And then she’ll be jealous, Jake thought.
