Summary: "If I ever go AWOL you’ll know where to find me."
I love airports: so many people leaving to go to so many different places in the World, connected for a short moment with a smile, a conversation or just a touch before disappearing into the oblivion that is six billion people.
I pause for one moment, staring at the cities on the display screen and choosing my imaginary destination, had I the time and the money, to randomly go to places. There are so many: Kiev, Phnom Penh, Dallas, Seoul, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Warsaw, Melbourne, New York and Budapest.
“If I suddenly would choose to go missing, leave my family and friends without trace, then I’d go to New York. In a city with 12 million people I could disappear into thin air. No one would know or care who I was, so I wouldn’t need to be anyone but the anonymous.” I decide firmly. Laura smiles.
“Would you leave me?” She asks and I smile.
“Never.” I promise. “Anyway, now you know: if I ever go AWOL you’ll know where to find me.”
“In New York? I wouldn’t have a chance in hell of finding you there.” Laura tells me, lacing her hands through mine.
“You’d find a way.” I tell her confidently. “Anyway, now I’ll only ever go to New York if I want to be found, seeing as you now know.”
“I’ll remember that.” Laura promises me before we walked on in the terminal, leaving my promise in the air along with the tap of traveller’s shoes.
