Untitled (Kano's Tales)Summary: In which Abbey enjoys her lunch and Kano addresses his suspicions on her playing hooky.
Author's Note: I am grouping this in with another series in this story called 'snapshots' which don't have a concrete time line and may not make it into the finished work.
Abbey looked up from the small lacquered box sitting on her knees, a pair of chopsticks in her hand, a handkerchief folded beside her, and smiled. She had six rolls of sushi in the box and a small amount of rice, a bit of soy sauce in a bowl. Her makeup was nearly nonexistent that day and Kano hadn't remembered the last time he'd seen her like that. There may not have been a day, but she still looked pretty. Usually she had her eyes done up with dark eyeliner and he thought vaguely, maybe she hadn't had school that day. But she was wearing her uniform. She had her socks pulled up to her knees, just below where her skirt fell. She'd taken off her blazer because the day had heated up quite a bit since the cool morning broke and her white blouse was incredibly bright and clean and he wondered idly just what measures Abbey's mother went to to make sure her uniform was spotless. It must have been nice to have someone around that cared for her so; Kano bet she even made Abbey's bento box up that morning before she sent her off to school.
School. He pressed his lips together for a long moment, recalling the tenderness when they touched. He looked at the tree that Abbey had her back against as she popped a roll of sushi into her mouth with one deft movement of the chopsticks. The sun was nearly directly above them and Kano wished he carried a watch so he could know the time. It may not have been a matter to him any longer considering he had all the time in the world, but he would have given quite a bit of that time to patronize Abbey for not being in school at the moment. "Did your mother make that for you?" He asked, his voice short and sharp so she would hear it. Despite all of his years spent away from Japan, he still had a slight accent when one listened in enough.
Abbey slowed her chewing and kept her eyes low, the guilt easily readable. Kano smiled a little bit, though, shaking his head.
"Why are you not in school?" He tilted his head to the side and looked up from the life in the grass to watch every single emotion melt into Abbey's features. She pouted her lips out and he nearly laughed at her.
"Well...I...I haven't missed that many classes this semester!" She said with a fervent nod of her head.
"You are still missing a lesson, though. How will you learn what they taught today?"
Her lips thinned out and she dropped her shoulders, pulling her elbows in towards her body in a sort of defensive gesture. "I can get notes from other students!" Her eyes opened in a gust of brilliance, as if she had solved a riddle and she smiled.
"You have friends in your class, then?"
Abbey was silent after that and picked her chopsticks back up, clicking the tips together before she pinched another roll of sushi and popped it into her mouth. She chewed slowly and kept her eyes straight ahead, as if she were staring right through Kano and it amused him. He could almost hear her thoughts but he allowed her to fume and only laced his fingers together and laid them atop one knee. He waited for her to finish her lunch and was careful not to watch her as she packed her chopsticks and napkin away, shoving the empty box back into her bag. There were two sushi rolls left and Kano knew she would have offered them to him, but she was angry with him and that was fine. Kano might have refused, unless they were the spicy tuna ones her mother made for her sometimes. He really enjoyed those. She wouldn't ask though, not since he'd made her angry.
Abbey leaned back against the tree trunk and crossed her arms over her chest, finally raising her gaze to meet his. "I don't have to be friends with someone to ask them for some notes. You think someone'd be grateful that I took the time out of my day to come and visit them."
"I have all of the time in the world, Abbey." He reminded her softly, shaking his head at her weak excuse. "If you wanted to see me you could have told me to meet you after school, instead of missing out on a lecture."
Abbey frowned dramatically and Kano almost fell for it. He had learned very quickly that she used her ability to make anyone else in the room feel like crap or like gold to the fullest extent and he was not about to take that.
"Right. My mom would love to see you walking me home." She scoffed.
"Your mother has seen me quite a few times and each time she has been very kind to me. It's not as if I am trying to eat her daughter up or something silly like that." He spoke evenly and calmly over the smile on his lips because her entire posture faltered again. He could break through her walls without even a dent. She was sugar glass and he was fire.
"I just wanted to see you and I know how you like the park in the sunlight." Abbey admitted, deflated. She slumped back against the tree and looked up towards the sky as if she didn't want anything to do with Kano.
The corners of his lips pulled up in the smallest twinge of a smile and he nodded his head forward. "I thank you for the thought," He said softly. "But you really should not miss class due to me. I have enough weight on my shoulders, now should I quiz you on your arithmetic?"
Abbey gawked at Kano as if he had sprouted a second head and gathered enough of herself up from the ground to make an exasperated noise. "You are impossible!" She exclaimed.
He shrugged and screwed up his face a little at the accusation. "Perhaps. Are you going to eat those two sushi rolls, though?"
