"Psst, Josh! Over here!"
The dark, curly-haired bookworm looked up nonchalantly, very mildly surprised that someone had called his name. He looked to his left and then to his right. No one was in sight, except an old lady (the librarian) bending over to reach a low shelf and a stack of books almost hiding a male science student (or teacher; he could never really tell and he did not care to anyway).
"Joshua!" hissed the female voice he had heard earlier. He jumped slightly at the sudden ferocity of the voice's tone.
Then someone poked him on the shoulder and finally he realised that the source of the voice had been behind his chair all along. He sighed and turned around in his seat to peer over the backrest; and there she was, a small-sized girl with a playful manner about her and a strange spark in her eyes.
"What do you want, Halcyon?" he asked boredly.
"Shh! Not so loud!" whispered the girl, glancing around as if she had something to hide. "I have a problem. Will you listen to me?"
Joshua raised a lazy eyebrow. "You want me to listen to your girl problems?"
Halcyon pouted. "Please, Joshie. I feel bad ranting to Faythe all the time..."
Something at the back of his mind twitched. Joshie?
"I refuse," he said flatly. "Now go away or I'll tell the librarian you're snooping around and disturbing students."
Halcyon furiously stuck a tongue out at him. "Oh, fine. Be that way!" She made a silent display of stomping away, but it did little to change Joshua's mind. He returned to reading his book.
"Girls..." he sighed.
