Story: Water Lilly
Summary: Lilly finds out just what kind of criminal Ian is.
Lilly lazed around her house. There she was on her couch, gazing up at the TV on the wall with her arm dangling to the floor. She had the remote on her stomach mashing buttons with her other hand to flip through channels since nothing was on. Ian raced passed her in rather dark attire. She saw him out of the corner of her eye and leaped up from her spot before he could make it to the door.
“Are you going to work?” Her voice stopped him in his tracks with has hand on the door knob, already twisted to open. He let go and turned around slowly.
“Yeah, why?” Ian looked at her, intrigued as to why she was now interested in his line of work. He knew where this was headed, too.
“Can I go with you?” Lilly was obviously bored and was looking something, anything, to do. Ian cringed at her question.
“I don’t think that’d be a good idea, you know?” His words were forced as he hated rejecting her.
“I don’t know. I want to know.”
“Curiosity killed the cat.” He tried to crack a smile but it wasn’t working. She shook her head and was coming for him. He tried to fold his arms in defiance.
“I’m no clumsy cat. I know you’re a criminal. I don’t think you have anything to be ashamed of-”
“Lilly, I’m not ashamed. I just don’t think you belong at my job.” He cut her off. She just sighed and rolled her eyes.
“You think I can’t handle it?” She put her hands on her hips, demanding to know.
“I don’t think I could handle it!”
“What?!” There it was. Ian had almost come to saying she was insane. She was too much to handle sometimes. He bit his lip and shot her a cold stare before turning around to leave.
Lilly dropped her hands to her sides, feeling completely hurt. Instead of letting it get to her, she huffed to let out her rage that was building up inside of her. As the door slammed shut she stormed out of the room to get dressed. Ordinarily she’d take her time to find something extravagant to wear but this time she just grabbed whatever was better than her slobby clothes with holes in the shirt.
On her way out the door she grabbed a flashlight because it was getting dark out. She headed out the door and hopped on her bicycle. Lilly skidded out to the street where she was peddling faster than she had ever before.
Up a head was Ian in the car he always left in. They were driving fairly slow as they were scouting out a place. The car stopped a few houses down the street. Lilly slowed to a stop a little ways behind as to not be seen by Ian and his accomplice. She watched as they got out of the car and headed into the dark house. It was a medium sized modern looking place similar to the one Lilly owned. All the lights were out as it appeared no one was home.
Lilly crawled forward on her bike to see Ian and his much larger “friend”. Ian walked up to the window, looking inside. He waved to the other and they went around back. This was Lilly’s chance.
She quickly got off her bike and pushed it into some near by bushes. She ran over to the side of the house and peered around the side to see Ian working his magic on the back door. Her hands clung to the wall while she looked in awe of these skills she wasn’t aware he had.
Ian and the other guy walked inside leaving the door open behind them. Lilly scurried under the windows to the door to see inside the pitch black house where she could barely make out the figures moving about.
Ian paused for a moment. “You hear something?” He held his hand out to say stop to the man he was with. They stood for a minute in the silence to see if the sound would reappear. Lilly knelt by the side of the doorway breathless.
The lights came on inside. There was a blood curdling scream followed by a rather quick gunshot. Outside Lilly pressed her hands against her mouth to keep the shock from being heard. Groaning sounds came from inside and then rustling of what sounded like might be plastic bags. Lilly removed her hands to place them on the ground in front of her to look in more. She had to know it wasn’t Ian. And it wasn’t.
There was Ian and the other mysterious man placing someone into a large garbage bag. The body did not fit well enough and the other man went digging around for another bag to cover up the bloody legs that were twitching about on the floor. Lilly gritted her teeth watching everything. The man and Ian lifted up the person to carry them outside. Lilly began to get to her feet but couldn’t dart across fast enough. As the man was walking backwards out the door, Ian saw her flash by, dropping his end in shock.
“Lilly?!” Ian was horrified.
“What the hell is going on?” A heavy voice came from the other guy who also dropped his bag to see what had startled Ian. He stepped over the bag, clinging to the side of the door to look at Lilly in the dark. The only light was coming from the moon and the lights from inside pouring out of the window she was next to.
“What the, and I can not stress this enough, FUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” She had no answer. She just continued to look at the bags that were leaking blood behind Ian’s feet.
“Dude, she’s here, I don’t know who she is, but she’s a witness and she’s either going to help us get the fuck out of here fast or I’m gonna shoot her.” Ian ignored the tough guy act from him.
“Just get the bag, stupid.” They traded ends, lifting up the heavy, leaking body.
“What about this broad, huh? Ian shook his head at him as they walked out.
“Don’t worry, Carl, I got it covered.” They walked by Lilly and stopped. Ian licked his lips and looked over at Lilly sticking his hip out a little. “Could you reach in my pocket and get the keys so you can bring the car back here for us?” Dead silent Lilly did as he asked and took off for the car while they waited.
“Bitch is heavy.” Carl strained. Ian laughed.
“You need to work out more.”
Lilly drove up slowly with the headlights off. Her hands clung to the steering wheel as she watched them walk around back to the trunk with the body. She heard a thud and the trunk slam. The other two got in the car, Ian getting in the front seat next to her.
“You want me to drive, babe?” Lilly nodded, letting go of the wheel. Ian climbed over her as she slid into the passenger side.
They sped away down to the lake in the dark without any lights. It was a very quiet drive as Ian was too focused on driving, Carl rarely had things to say, and Lilly was too terrified. At the same time, she was somewhat excited. She’d never done anything like this before and had no idea until now that Ian was this serious of a criminal.
When they arrived, there were already others waiting on the shore. Ian and Carl got out while Lilly stayed in the car. She leaned up the dashboard letting her eyes dart around at everything and everyone. There was an entire business deal going on around her that she was practically outside of.
Then she saw it. Two other people who were faceless nobodies were taking away the bag from the skin. It was a girl with long blonde hair. Her arms and neck were broken from being dropped. Lilly got out of the car as they were pulling out hack saws from their vehicle. She ran over and looked down at the dead girl on the ground. Who ever she was, she was shot in the stomach. Lilly tried examine her more but the two people began shoo’ing her away.
Lilly wasn’t paying attention to them. She was watching Ian talk to some other woman. The people continued saying pointless things to her as she watched him conduct his business. All the sounds blurred into nothing. All Lilly could do was watch him and wonder what he was doing.
