Notes: Ichthus did a pocky chain yesterday and I wanted to try my hand at it since I've never done one before. And I wrote mine about Mike's sneakers, hahaha. Mostly Mike's sneakers getting abused, go figure. College-era.

"Are you still wearing those shoes?" Roy asks, making a face. "Didn't I tell you get rid of them?"

Mike looks down at his fading blue converse, the rubber almost grey and peeling. "They're my shoes."

Roy shakes his head. "They are so past their expiration date. You hold onto stuff for wayyy too long. You need to learn to let go!"

Before Mike can protest again, Roy's reaching down to seize a loose flap of rubber. "What are you-" stutters off into stunned silence when Roy yanks.

"Now, then," Roy says, wagging the strip of rubber. "Let's go shopping."

Nathan's pen makes a scritching noise against Mike's shoe and it almost tickles, even through the canvas, through his sock. Mike tries not to jerk his foot from Nathan's lap.

"What are you drawing?"

"A griffin." Nathan looks up. "You said you didn't care."

Mike shrugs. "I don't. I just want them to look less new, you know?"

"Yeah..." Nathan pulls back to assess his work. "What do you think?"

The griffin's tail stretches from the blue canvas out onto the white rubber toe.

"Cool," Mike says.

Nathan grins. "I think they'll look great at the foot of my bed."

"Have you seen my shoes?"

Rayn stops reading and looks up at the ceiling, letting the book fall open against his stomach. "They're on your feet."

"Funny," Mike says, appearing around the corner. "Not my work shoes-my other shoes."

"They're under the kitchen table."

"Under the-huh." He retrieves the sneakers from the kitchen, looking sheepish. "Thanks, I forgot that I...thanks."

"No problem," Rayn says. "Hey, are you sticking around for a while or...?"

"No, sorry I'm just...changing and grabbing some stuff. I have to go."

"See you later?" Rayn tries, but he's already out of earshot.

"I have to go," Mike says, lacing up the first sneaker.

"No, you don't. What do you have to do?"

Nathan's hand is trying to crawl up under the shirt he just put back on.

"Nathan! Stop fucking around!"

"What? Come on! Look how early it is!"

"Forget it!" As Mike reaches for his other shoe, it's suddenly snapped away and he looks up just in time to see Nathan pitching it out the open window. Mike's mouth drops open.

"Did you just throw my shoe out the fucking window?"

For a second, Nathan also looks surprised. "I might've. Yeah."

Rayn find him at the kitchen sink, scrubbing the shoes with a toothbrush.

"Not my toothbrush, right?"

Mike laughs. "It's mine. I'm, you know..." He looks down at the wet sneakers in the sink. The ink on the canvas is bleeding, fading. "Tide's not really working though."

"Try baking soda?" Rayn suggests. "It works on ink."

"Thanks." Mike stops scrubbing. When he looks up, he seems embarrassed. "I didn't want to throw them away. They were just starting to break in." He sighs. "Do you think I hold onto things for too long?"

"We all do," Rayn says, without thinking.

For being kind of a quickie, I think I like this one.
