Story:
From the OutsideSummary: She is Maxene Rice, and she is the 5th child among 9 other siblings. She meets Jake, an unsteady nobody like her, only a little notorious for his actions. When their worlds collide, everything seemed perfectly all wrong and perfectly all right.
Notes: Wee, finally got the next chapter up.
She closes her eyes, tucks her hands in her pockets, and hopes it isn’t as worse as she has expected it. Standing beside her is her new friend, soaked and drenched. Jake brushes his sleeves, and throws a smile at little Max.
Maxene rolls her eyes pathetically, and slaps a hand at her forehead.
“What?” he asks her.
“Do you have to do that?”
“Do what?” he repeats it again, innocently like a long-lost child.
Max moves her hands around her head, “Do...this. Like smile when nothing’s wrong. Jake, in case you haven’t known that one yet, we’re in big trouble.”
He shrugs, “I am aware of that.”
“And?” she tries her best not to insult Jake, but her voice is shaky itself that she couldn’t do a thing about it.
He looks at her complacently, still smiling. “And, you have to trust me.”
The principal, a beefy mustached man, approaches them and hands out a towel to both. Jake rubs his hair, as Maxene shyly wipes her self.
“Thanks, Mr. Brown.” Maxene says. “We’re very sorry we ran across the sprinklers and set off the fire alarm. We didn’t mean to do it, anyways.”
Mr. Brown holds out his hand to shut Max up, and looks at the boy next to her. “Any words of apology from you, Mr. McKenzie?”
Jake grins, “Sorry, Mr. Brown. Just wanted some fun.”
“So, you ran across the field with Ms. Rice over here,” he looks at the shy brunette, and shifts his gaze back at Jake, “and you didn’t even think that it will cause commotion among the teachers.”
Jake sighs, “We didn’t mean to spray mud in the Teacher’s Lounge, Mr. Brown.”
“I’ll let you off with a warning this time,” Max’s hazel eyes lights up, and stares into the chubby principal. “All because both of you are freshman students, and I don’t intend to get into a brawl with Mr. Rice.”
Saved by the name again, Max thinks.
They are ushered to the hall outside, packed by the students. Max realizes it was already recess and Jake continues to annoy her with a bag of chips he says he snuck during their ‘almost-detention-sentence’.
“Come on, Max,” he says, “I know you want to. And don’t tell me you’re a girl who’s into a diet.”
She shakes her head immediately and plunges her hand to grab a handful of potato crisp. She smiles afterwards when she realized the flavor was ham and cheese.
“We actually pulled it off, huh?”
He nods happily, crunching sounds formed in their mouths. “Yup. He thinks we’ll never do it again.”
Max gives him a startled look, eyes widening like a full moon.
“Well, okay. So maybe we’ll put that idea for next week,” he reassures her, but fails when he sees her face which still won’t budge. “Fine! We’ll stop at that.”
Then, there is laughter.
Jake’s giggles are suppressed when he remembers the incident earlier. “All thanks to your mighty name.”
“Hey, I didn’t wish I was born to their family, it just happened and...”
“Whoa, chill,” he tells her, and pauses when they were both silent. “It’s not like I was saying that you---er, I mean...I wasn’t actually trying to...”
“Okay, enough.” Max says, staring at her watch and slips her hand on Jake’s arm. “We’re late for our Biology class.”
