Summary: A quick buck is made.
She was hungry. She was also barefoot, confused, bleeding from the cut in her head, and lost. But mostly, she was hungry. She was also walking. Justy looked down when she felt grass under her feet again. She looked around.
The road she’d been following had gone into a town, and then split in two. She’s maintained course, and was in a park. There were trees, and neat rows of bushes. There was a gazebo, and a fountain. Justy went over to the fountain and stuck her head in it. The water was cold, and she swallowed enormous mouthfuls before her lungs filed a formal complaint and she had to come up gasping. The night air was cold on her dripping scalp as she leaned against the smooth stones. There were lights in the fountain, and there was something glittering on the bottom. Justy looked around, but there wasn’t anyone else in the park. She looked back at the fountain. There was definitely something in the bottom. Justine sat nonchalantly on the edge of the fountain, then swiveled around to splash her feet into the water. She slid off the edge, levering herself awkwardly down until her feet touched bottom. She reached down, and fished out one of the shiny things.
It was a dime. Justine considered this development with all the solemnity a small child can manage. She fished around again, and grabbed another.
It was a quarter.
The next one was another dime.
Then a penny.
Another quarter.
Two nickels, glued together with black crud.
Justine continued her fishing expedition until she had completely cleared the bottom of the fountain. She pile her haul on the stone ledge, counting it out carefully. She had two dollars and thirty-seven cents in change, a guitar pick, and a key the length of her pinkie finger. Justy considered this for several moments before she padded off in search of a late-night diner.
