Story / World: Massive WTFery AU (aka GB)
Challenge: Gooseberry 02. pegasus / unicorn + Butter Pecan 24. light
Toppings / Extras: Chopped Nuts
Notes: The GB... thing... could be called high fantasy in that it is fantasy and may appear to be high, that is, on drugs. In other words welcome to a very weird AU / do you see what Gooseberry did to me?!, etc. Have some Lyssia.

She was perfectly aware that the unicorn was nothing but a large horse with a spike of horn jutting improbably out of its forehead. She knew this, and yet it insisted on looking like a fine, lighter-than-air thing, all impossibly gauzy white and a kind of shine that would normally leave her blinking spots away.

This wasn’t normal, though. She reached out tentatively, and-

“Fuck!”

Isabel blinked. “It got you?”

“Oh, no, I’m missing a chunk of my arm because it passed me right by, I’m sure. What do you think?” Lyssia gritted her teeth and tried to fold the detached skin back over, vaguely sure that she could heal faster if she did so, vaguely wondering where the unicorn had gone after it bit her.

Her partner tilted her head. “Point there. So you want me to kill it now?”

“Yes--” Replying seemed to be more of a formality; Isabel’s eyes were clouding over with red already. In the time it took Lyssia to wonder if she should point out that they were in a half-dead forest and they needed the head of the creature standing a few dozen meters away as proof, the magic took.

She walked over, wincing with every step, Isabel following, and surveyed the damage.

“Sorry,” Isabel added, blinking rapidly as she seemed to make a habit of, Lyssia had noticed, after doing something.

Lyssia poked the burnt remains cautiously, with one foot. “Will this serve as proof? Do you think they’ll take it?”

“Oh, I don’t know. When their children stop disappearing, do you think they’ll take it as proof to what they should have already noticed?”

“In other words it’s going to be a while.”

“Sorry about that.” She still didn’t sound sorry, however. She was smiling. The smile slid off her face as Lyssia said nothing, until Isabel finally asked, or tried to ask, “So, your arm...”

“It should be fine.” Lyssia let go of it as proof. It still hurt, but it wouldn’t do to show that.

“...Right.”

“Actually it’s my left arm,” she said primly, “so that’s just as well.”

“I didn’t mean that.” Isabel knew it was somewhat pointless to say that - her partner was very strangely fond of taking things the wrong way - but she’d felt obliged nonetheless. “Why did it go for you?”

Lyssia smirked. “Why didn’t it go for you?”

Isabel looked thoughtfully at her right foot. “Well, you know...”

Throwing up her right hand (the left was still unavailable, although it had subsided into a bone-deep red-black ache), Lyssia exclaimed, “But you’re younger than me!”

Her partner grinned.
