ahhahaha, she gets what she wants! I found myself rooting pretty hard for Reida in this one. And I love how she drags the sword through the dirt at the end--last line is excellent too.

Is "girls don't wield swords" a common sentiment in your universe, where many of the knights are women, or is Hakaro just a jerk?

thank you :)

Reida is never destined to be much of a fighter, but that doesn't mean anyone else gets to tell her she can't.

No, it's not a common thing, we're dealing with culture clash here. Where Lyssa & friends - and the necromancer crew as well - live, there is no stigma on girls and weapons. But Hakaro is from across the mountains where swords are big and manly and no woman has any business lifting one. He has lots of things to get over learn from his new friends.

LMAO! This is so funny! I can see it all happening. Poor Kairn can't even keep out of trouble when someone else is scrapping. I'm starting to find Berwyk occasionally likable :)

thank you :)

hey, Berwyk's usually a pretty agreeable fellow if you can get past the utter creepiness of what he keeps in the attic and the basement and whatnot ;)

Even if Reida isn't that much of a fighter, her learning how to use a sword is both a good thing and slightly scary.

And even though I was on her side, I still smiled when she couldn't pull the sword out on the first try. ^_^

I think she becomes fond of the small and deadly, like knives, which might be even scarier.

And I just couldn't have her be completely right. It was already too cliche. I didn't want to pull the whole girls can use swords too, see? crap - not that I don't have girls with swords, but that doesn't mean all the girls need to be experts with one.

Thanks! :)

Heh, yeah, I was going to say, Reida seems more the "stab you in the back in a dark alley" type than outright swordfighting...but she has to have a crack at everything, I agree.

I like Berwyk too, a lot...then again, you know I'm a sucker for that nice-on-the-outside, potentially deranged and creeptastic on the inside type. XD

I honestly don't think she has any interest whatsoever in sword fighting, it's just the principle of someone having told her no. That doesn't fly in Reida's world.

I'm having fun with him. Still haven't decided if he has much to do later in the story or if he needs to die off so he won't have a chance to meddle in things too much.

Thanks :)

true, though I'm just not sure where and how he'd fit in and if it might put a damper on other things that need to happen

I get the culture clash thing bothering Hakaro, but I still feel bad for him. This is something he is obviously takes really seriously, and its clear that Berwyk, some of the others dont: "Youre not even a mage!"

Still, he does act the jerk and get what is coming to him in a way.

Also, sorry for posting in backwards order, Ive just started reading this story after I noticed it the other day.

Thanks :)

He's quite set in his ways, so it's going to make some trouble for him. (He's a fairly new and minor addition to the story - hence the confusion above)

And no problem! The way RaTs works, as lots of the authors - and their stories - are active, old posts are always fair game. In fact, most of us are quite tickled to see people go digging through the archives to read old stuff, so feel free to poke around any time you find one you like. :)
