Having not been in residence long in this, our fair City, and thus far not having experienced these curses I've been told of, I have had a bit of time to think. Many of you have been very informative and for that, you have my thanks. I offer you now the results of my musings.
Thanks to a very kind soul, I have in my possession a guide to this City. It has also been very informative. It would seem this place is governed by a group of individuals referred to as “the Deities.” Whether this plane is their creation or simply an area they have claimed as their own has yet to be revealed. Much of their existence remains a mystery, but a few things can be surmised from the state of this place. They draw us here from our homelands and endow us with a clever little device that allows us to communicate with one another, even at great distance. They provide us with commodities: housing, food, and other provisions. Very little must we focus on survival here. So minute is the focus that, by some power, we are brought back to life, should our deaths transpire. No, the deities do not play death games. The clock is a most intriguing factor, as well. The ticking is audible to all. It rattles its rhythm to our very cores, yet its presence is only felt when one is alone.
Let us gather facts. We are all given a device with which to communicate. We are all plagued with a menacing ticking when left to our own devices. We are regularly stricken with curses that either bring us together or compel us to reveal our darkest secrets. We need not fret over protection from the elements or the filling of our bellies.
All the features of this place lead me to one conclusion: we are an experiment. The deities of this plane seek to glean some fundamental understanding. I am not so deluded as to assume I might understand that goal. The minds of gods are not meant for mortal comprehension. I seek only to know my place. In this grand experimentation, I am but one factor, one variable.
I will not bemoan my fate. It was not for me to decide. A man is not measured by his existence, but by what he does with the existence he is given. I will endure these trials, and attempt to learn something. Will I strive to understand the mysteries of existence? I am not no conceited. I can only hope to know Drizzt Do'Urden. That is my course, my journey, and my destination. I am far from my journey's end, but I know my road.
