Hi Zoe. Cairns is the best option. The reef is closer here and the tourism industry is set up for viewing it. For the best way to find accommodation, look up in the Australian Yellow Pages, under Bed and Breakfast accommodation over the net. You can visit the World Heritage listed Daintree rainforest from here as well. I live about an hours drive away from Cairns, up in the mountains on the Atherton Tablelands, where it is cooler and dryer. Try and fit in a visit up here, it is truly beautiful hinterland farming country with its own charm. There are lots of on farm produce stores selling everything from biodynamic cheeses and yoghurts to fruit wines and liquors. Coffee farms are getting big here too and there are a couple of tasting houses for them as well. There are day trips up here or you can hire a car to get here. It takes about an hour to get up here. Hi Jo thank you so much for replying to my post. Sorry I haven't replied to you sooner.
Unfortunately I posted that entry over 2 years ago and you are the only one to reply to it. I did go with my mate and we had soooo much fun. I love Australia and I'm looking forward to the day I can afford to go back. We managed to hire a car and went to the Daintree Rain Forest which was fantastic, as well as go to some of the islands to look at the Barrier Reef.
