Name meanings

More boredom from me!

I like looking into the meaning behind names so I thought, why not pass a minute or two and look into what the Wild Things names mean.

Alexander
Protector of Mankind

C/Katherine (in the first script her name was revealed to be Catherine, also in the movie you hear them refer to her as 'Kate' when saying goodnight)
Pure, virginal, clear

Carol
Champion, Manly, Strong (the female form of Carol means melody and song, fyi)

Douglas
Dark stranger, flowing from the dark river

Ira
Watchful, Descendant

Judith (from the name Judah)
Praised

And of course,

Max
Greatest

Naturally Bull is just... well, Bull. But what do you guys think? Do their names actually reflect who they are, or what they represent in the story?

I think Alexander's name came through towards the end, when he was the first (and only) to question whether or not Max was a real king. When he learned the truth he didn't get mad, or angry, all he did was give mankind (Max) a warning to not let Carol know of his masquarade. He protected Max to the best of his ability by giving him a heads up.

KW, to me, is fairly innocent in the story. All she's striving for is to become her own individual, and even if that means she leaves her family to be with Bob and Terry she still cares for the family she's trying to remove herself from. She doesn't really see the hurt she's causing in Carol until it's too late. She's also clear in when telling Max how hard it was being a family with Carol being the way he is.

Carol is all three of those words, champion in his own eyes and egotistic view of himself, the manliest what with those horns and powerful claws and last but not least strong. But he's strong both physically as well as emotionally, yet almost too strong. He becomes so overcome by what he's feeling at a certian moment in time he can either be ecstatically happy, blind with rage or incredibly depressed. It doesn't always pay to be strongest, I guess.

Douglas, well... he becomes a dark stranger when he finally reveals to Carol that he always knew Max wasn't really a king, that he only agreed because it's what Carol wanted. At that point, to Carol, Douglas isn't the friend he thought he was which combined with his intense anger at that moment resulted in what happened to the poor feathered Wild Thing.

Then there's Ira, who in comparison to his fairly noisy and obnoxious mate Judith, is fairly quiet. He offers his support to anyone who may need it, be it Carol trying to destroy their houses, Max in making the tunnels to the fort, and especially so when Max is leaving and it's only Ira who he hugs goodbye besides KW. As for descendant, Ira looks much older then the other Wild Things. His eyes seem more aware, gentle, and smart despite his fairly quiet nature. You have to consider all those winkles too... for all we know Ira could be the oldest one amongst them, descended from the older Wild Things whose bones were burning that night Max arrived. Or I'm just pulling words out of my behind. ;D

Now for Judith, ironic her name stems from the name Judah -- everyone knows who the most famous Judah was, after all. The one who betrayed Christ, blah blah we know this story get on with it (unless I confused the names. Whups. That's what I get for not going to church in years). Her name means blessed, and above all things Judith appears to believe she is. She's never one to keep her thoughts and feelings to herself, always heard by everyone and never afraid of anyone.

Last but certainly not least... Max. Greatness rolled into a ball and shaped into a nine year old whose family life isn't going the way he wants. Who runs away to become King of all Wild Things on their island, where he rules and owns everything (except for the holes in the trees, a rock and that stick) that he sees. That alone to Max, is great, just as his name states so.
