Vampire Rant

Let me start by saying that this is not about LARP. This is about the actual monster. I have just finished reading this New York Times article about the trend of the vampire. The story delves into the modern depictions of the vampire courtesy of "Twilight," "True Blood" and a few others.

I must admit I was saddened by the whole thing. The vampire seems to have gone from the predatory monster, something to fear, something that is dangerous to every teenage girl's dream date. There is no real threat imposed by the new Vampire. He is not dangerous, just misunderstood. he is just like every other teenage bad boy in high school, just with different dietary preferences.

And the vampire girl is the bad girl cheerleader. She is the girl at the club who is mysterious, assertive and physically perfect. Any girl can be her with enough liposuction and the right makeup and clothes.

And that is what this monster has become, an icon to be emulated. I wonder how much of an icon this monster would be if it hadn't become so pretty? I guess I am better off watching "Nosferatu."
