I just watched some clips of the Rumbelle scenes on You Tube and now I seriously wish I hadn't. : ( I'm embarrassed by how sad it made me, but I just couldn't help it. In the first few seconds of the well scene I actually thought that it was going to be the start of Rumbelle healing, but then it went down hill so fast. : ( Does anybody else feel like the writers might actually hate Rumbelle shippers? : (
They don't hate us. They simply didn't plan Rumbelle beyond Skin Deep, evidenced by EdR being a guest star instead of a regular. They then spent the next four years not having a clue how to properly adapt Beauty & the Beast (an automatically adaptable tale) for RC (who made a Johnny Walker corporate short epic). As Shadow says, we are in the presence of master story tellers.
Skin Deep was such a beautiful episode. When the writers care, they can create really wonderful stories. That's part of the reason why Broken Heart made me so sad. The well scene just really seemed to come out of nowhere, most especially after Belle told Rumple it was never too late in The Bear and the Bow. My theory is that maybe Hook or Zelena stole Belle's heart or put a spell on her to hurt Rumple. But to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if turned out to be just sloppy writing. : (
I haven't even been watching season 5, except for The Bear and the Bow (which was awesome). What I'm hearing about this episode really saddens me, too. What prompted Belle to do this? They seemed to be heading for a possibly hopeful place at the end of The Bear and the Bow. I don't understand what happened. It doesn't sound like Rumpel did anything in the ensuing episodes that could have made Belle upset enough to do this.
EdR needed maternity leave. Basic as that. Plus, they couldn't write in the pregnancy, because logically, it would have been Will's not Gold's. Adam and Eddy at least had the decency to spare us that particular soap opera for which I am grateful. Unfortunately, the story they have given us isn't as strong as it could be.

So script-wise, which was what I was asking about, Rumpel really didn't do anything new to set Belle off? They just pulled this out of the blue because of the behind-the-scenes reality? **rolls eyes.** Typical. It really does make Belle look bad, especially after The Bear and the Bow and her saying "It's never too late" and all that.
I loved The Bear and the Bow, too. : ) It's one of my favorite episodes in general and most definitely my favorite from season five so far. Like you said, Belle and Rumple seemed to be in a hopeful place at the end of The Bear and the Bow and Rumple hasn't done anything since then that would have caused Belle to do this. My theory is that maybe Hook or Zelena may have put a spell on her or took her heart to hurt Rumple. That's the only thing I can think of that would make sense. After Belle telling Rumple it was never too late only a few episodes ago, the well scene seemed to really come out of nowhere. : (
I will cling to the idea that Belle isn't herself too. That certainly sounds better than her turning against Rumpel after the "It's never too late" scene.
