NYC trip!

I'M BACK! Classes are over, my internet is finally working at home again (thus the reason for my delay) and I'm back from NYC (another reason for my absence).

Well, NYC was AMAZING! Got to go to Central Park (LOVELY and did you know there is a castle smack dab in the middle of it?), ride on the Subway (metro is so much cleaner), see Time Square, which is magical especially at night, and do a bunch of other stuff that I adored. Also, I finally got to see Wicked as well as a bunch of other musicals.

Wicked - Although I wish I could see it with the original cast (Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel are the best things EVER! So much love for the Cheno) this cast was great. The Elphaba was an amazing singer; we had the understudy since Julia Murney was off that night. Our G(a)linda was like G(a)linda on crack, in a good way though. She was very funny. Fiyero was adorable, not the best singer but he had the energy and chemistry to make up for it. The whole performance was, well, wicked. Excuse the pun. The singing, dancing, acting, everything was so well done. I didn't want it to end. If you're ever in NYC remember to see it and remember to get tickets ahead of time because this show is always sold-out.

Les Mis - Beautiful. I was so excited because we had Lea Salonga as Fantine, who played Eponine in the 10th Anniversary performance. She was great; her voice was flawless. Both Valjean and Javert had stunning voices. Also, the choreography and stage design were so well done. I got so giddy when they performed my favorite song: Do You Hear the People Sing? The whole thing was a delight to watch.

Rent - Now, I know I've said that I don't like Rent but I have come around and decided I like it now. I still think it tries too hard and has a corny ending but I can appreciate it and I really do love the music and message. However, this performance of the musical was rather disappointing. The Mimi, Tamyera Gray from 1st season of American Idol (I don't watch that show, but I remember her song with Kelly Clarkson that I liked so yeah), had a really good voice that made up for her lack of acting skills. Our Roger had a nice voice but it went from loud to really soft and he played a Roger with anger management issues. Our Mark (understudy) reminded me of the original Mark, Anthony Rapp, which probably helped make me like him since I adore Anthony Rapp’s Mark. Angel, another understudy, did well too and I must say that he made one pretty lady (I love Angel, especially “Today 4 U”). Maureen was alright, her “Over the Moon” was really entertaining but in “Take Me or Leave Me” she just didn’t have it. I don’t even want to talk about our Joanne because she was horrible, HORRIBLE. Plain and simple.

The Color Purple - I saw this because my mama wanted to see it. I wasn’t really excited for it or anything. I sorta thought it was going to be bad but it wasn’t. It was wonderful. Really touching. The lead, another American Idol star, Fantasia did a phenomenal job. I was pleasantly surprised by this musical. Very enjoyable.

I also got to see the new Greek and Roman exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of art. AMAZING! I was in awe the entire time. Classical heaven. The neatest thing in my opinion was an ancient safety pin a little smaller than my fist. It made me giggle. I will try to post some pictures soon. I think I’m going to try to get an internship there next summer. I’d love to be around that stuff everyday.
