Oh my god, what is with all the fat people!? I was at Costco today and this fat woman was talking to her fat husband when she made a comment on her probably fat daughter, "Oh all she eats is pizza so lets stock up on those." Do people not realize that this is the kind of behavior that has turned 2/3s of America's Citizens into unhealthy schmucks? ( Read more... )

Moving from California to the south was pretty shocking for me. Driving through Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi was pretty incredible. Food fucking sucks down here :(. If you love buffets, steaks and fried everything, this is the place to be. Went to South Carolina for lunch today, and holy crap. There couldn't have been anyone who weighed less than 250.

You've pretty much got it right that it's laziness and ignorance ( ... )

I do agree with you that something deeper is at work. I'd say there are two major factors to consider beside the aforementioned list. 1 since we have an embargo on Cuba we use high fructose corn syrup to sweeten almost everything instead of just using sugar. A persons body was never designed to digest HFC syrup so it does odd things ingested. The other would be all the food additives that are added into nearly all our food. That bag of Doritos has all kinds of stuff in in including MSG which causes people to eat more. MSG was actually defended by saying it could cause hunger and weight gain in elderly people that would otherwise wither away. Here's one quick study that popped up http://biomed.gerontologyjournals.org/cgi/content/full/56/4/M200 Now that would be fine if they kept MSG restricted to old people but what happens when nearly all prepared food has MSG in it? Increase in hunger and weight gain across the spread.

And, as an addendum, I'll say the obesity and diabetes rates are one thing that scare me about socialized medicine.

I suspect by the time the US government implements a true single payer health care system, the obesity and diabetes rates will be frightening. And the cost of treatment will end up eating a huge amount of money. And so the system will start to fail.

And then all the critics will be able to say they were right. That healthy people shouldn't have to subsidize the lazy fatties. While ignoring that more preventative care and especially education could've prevented it. Care and education that could have been delivered far earlier if the poorest people (who are also the fattest and unhealthiest) weren't afraid of going to the doctor because of cost.

I take issue with the idea that "fat == lazy". I suppose it may be true in some cases, but that particular assumption is absolutely not true in a great majority of cases, and it REALLY pisses me off.
