Rosalie came out of the room she shared with Emmet, his body contently sprawled across their bed, a sheet draped lazily over just one strong thigh.  As much as she loved her “Monkey Man” she sometimes had to work hard to leave him exhausted.

She needed to take a shower.  Alone.  She would just get dirty again if Emmet came in.  Walking into the bathroom she shared with her mate she started up the water as hot as possible.  While she and her siblings all had vastly different personalities that had led to many disagreements over the years they could all agree on one thing.  Having the shower has hot as possible was the best luxury in the world.  Carlisle had two large water heaters installed with the construction on the house just for that reason.  The heat whie scalding on any human, was heaven to them.  Their constantly cold bodies taking in the warmth like a sponge.  It didn’t last too long afterward, the warmth usually let them within a hour or maybe two if they had to dress bundled to blend in with the Forks weather.

There was another way to temporarily heat themselves even better:

Feasting.

Rosalie stepped out of the shower her feet connecting with the soft white plush area rug.  Alice had bought them all, hand made in France with the finest craftsmanship.  Wiping off the steam from the large mirror Rosalie smiled at her reflection.  She could walk into Forks High or anywhere else in the world with her blond hair still wet and still be the most beautiful woman in the room.  Reaching over the vanity she started her blow dryer and began to effortlessly finish up her routine.

“Babe?”  Emmet sat up the sheet pulling low on his one covered thigh.  He knew that she was in the bathroom primping like she always did after sex or hunting.  He mostly called out to her out of habit.

Emmet stood up and stretched letting the sheet fall and pool around his feet.  His powerful built body on display for all and no one.  He padded over to the door to pick up his discarded boxers that were flung over in the heat of the moment.

Pulling them on he began to wonder if Esme and Carlisle where back yet.  Or even Edward.  He may have been just the “muscle and jokes” of the family but he was pretty observant.  Edward had been a bit more open but seemingly even more closed off since the Bella incident.  Honestly he had been bummed that it didn’t work out.  Edward, despite his broodiness had been the best “big” brother he could think of.  Edward had also been going somewhere else to hunt when he was by himself he figured.  Usually they all hunted in the same area.  Usually has a family or pair, Edward would still attend those family dinners.  Lately though Emmet had a feeling Edward had been going somewhere else.  Hunting or just brooding he didn’t know.

Emmet decided to go wash up and has he stepped into the hall he could smell Rosalie’s jasmine body wash.

“Hmmm.” Emmet took in the scent.  It was something about Rosalie’s natural scent mixed with that that drove him wild.  He might see if he could persuade Rosie for another round in the shower.

He loved Rosalie, he truly did.  She saved him from death.  Something was missing though, something he couldn’t explain.

He was halfway across the hall to the bathroom he and Rosalie shared when he smelled something else.  Emmet’s eyebrows almost raised into his hairline.

“Dog?....”

Jasper sat in the lounge, his body draped across the couch.

He knew  that most of them considered the fact that he was empathic and the most recent addition to their “vegetarian” lifestyle to be most stressed.

Honestly, he felt that his abilities where one of the things that helped make the change form humans to animals that the more easy.  That and Alice.

He could feel her energy and feel it has well.  Despite them being what they where, he always felt that Alice was the closest to human.  Her energy and good attitude almost a person in it’s on right.  So tangible and always present.  Helping him keep the beast at bay.

“Jasper!”  Alice bent down and kissed her boyfriend on the lips.  Jasper reached up into the kiss.  Breaking away Alice walked down to the end of the couch and lifted his feet before placing them back on her lap.  Jasper sat up a bit looking down at her.  He could never remember anyone who made him feel this good not even when he was human.

Alice gave him a small smile.
“Are you alright?”

Jasper smiled back.
“Yes Alice, I’m just distilling out the emotions coming from Rosalie and Emmet.  They decided to be more obnoxiously loud than usual with Esme and Carlisle absent.”
Alice giggled.
“I think you could here them in Port Angeles.”
While she was talking Alice began to run her small doll like fingers up and down the back of Jaspers ankles,  the pale skin of his feet a shocking contrast to her blue knee length dress.

Jasper leaned his head back.
“I think the Volturi could even hear them.  We are not loud.  Carlisle and Esme are not loud.  I don’t think Edward would even be loud. ”

Alice hands reached down lower until she came to the scar on Jaspers left foot.  It was a stark alabaster against their already pale skin.  Crescent shaped and mean.  A gift from a fight with a pack of shifters Jasper had battled very long ago.  Back when he ran with another group of vampires who killed humans.  Jasper had a lot of scars on his upper body from battling other vampires, and one on his thigh from a bullet that went clean through the skin of his thigh, a product of the civil war.  This one on his left foot seemed to be the most sensitive.

“Have you seen Edward?”  Alice asked

“I believe he went out.  I can’t feel him in the house which is a bit of a relief to be honest.”  Jasper said.

Alice looked at Jasper then out of the floor to almost ceiling windows that lined the front side of the lounge.  She knew that for the past few weeks Edwards usual moods and been even more unusual.  They were starting to seep over to Jasper.

She and Jasper had talked to Carlisle about it.  He and Esme had noticed as well.  Something was there with Edward he seemed more alive in some ways, but he also seemed more distant.  She wasn’t sure if Rosalie and Emmet had noticed they had been so wrapped up in each other after the James incident.

He was spending a lot more time with Bella, has friends from what she saw, or out on his own.

“Did he go hunting?”  Alice smiled.

Before Jasper could reply Alice hand gripped his foot.  Jasper sat up completely swinging his legs to the floor.  He knew what this was, a vision.

“Alice what do you see?”  Jasper put his arm around her “Is it Victoria?  Is she back?”
The thought of Victoria returning had them all a bit on edge and even though he was a solider at heart and ready to fight at a moments notice he was enjoying the relative quite of the past few months after James.

“Alice?”  Jasper prodded again worry in his voice and etched on his face.

Alice visibly relaxed and finally spoke.
“No it’s not.  It’s Edward and yes he’s fine I believe, his clothes are just torn.  Alice sighed, the outfit he wore today had been one she had bought for him.  The shirt had clung just right and was now in shreds around his chest.  She could also see that he had been hunting, there was fresh blood on his mouth.  What got her the most was that Edward was surrounded by white fog as he walked in her vision.  His arms were cradled out like he was carrying a person but there was no one there.  The only thing there was it.
The soft light  was in his arms.

Before she could say anything else the front door was opened and Edward’s voice called out

“DAD!  CARLISLE!?”

Alice and Jasper ran out of the lounge and into the foyer to see what was happening.  There stood Edward.  There were two twin trails of blood running down his chin.  His hair usually a natural mess, was now standing every which way with a leaf still stuck in it.  His shirt was torn just the way Alice saw and he was missing a shoe.  If it wasn’t the state that he was in that shocked them.  It was the young man in his arms.  The young unconscious man with blood running down his arm.

Alice spoke up walking up to Edward.
“Carlisle called, he and Esme are on their way back from the hospital now.  What happened?”

Edward began to walk down the long halls of their home talking over his shoulder.  He made his way to Carlisle’s home examination room and placed Jacob down onto the cot.  He could here Alice’s thoughts, mostly just consisting of “what happened, is that boy alright?”  It was Jasper's though that stood out the most.

“No, Jasper I did not do this.”  Edward sighed turning back to them.  Jasper looked down at his feet.  He didn’t mean to think it, it was just seeing Edward standing there with twin crimson rivulets running down his chin with a young man draped in his arms like the cover of some trashy Gothic dime romance novel.

“Ah, I’m sorry Edward.  It’s just that-” he motioned to the boy and back at Edward.

Edward nodded his face still tense.

“Where home!”  Esme’s voice carried down the hall.  Her voice was soon joined by Carlisle footfalls.  His dress shoes lightly knocking against the  polished wood floors.  Carlisle walked into the sick room and looked at all of them.

“Edward, Alice, Jasper?  What’s wrong?”  Carlisle looked impeccable has usual his blond hair swept away from his face.  He was younger looking than he was when he was turned and turning him and made him look even better.  Edward always knew form experience people who didn’t know them thought Carlisle to be their older brother or young uncle.

“It’s him.”  Edward moved aside and nodded to the young man currently resting on the cot.

Carlisle still had his medical bag in his hands and immediately opened it to put on his stethoscope and pull out his pin light.  Walking over to Jacob he began to examine him and speak.

“What happened?”  He placed the scope on Jacob’s heart and then moved again to his lungs before nodding.

“He was attacked in the woods by the shifters.”  Edwards voice was cool as he spoke up.
“I was out hunting and I saw him by the river when I was going to freshen up.  I could read the shifters thoughts.  It was a planned attack, they chased him into the woods and I followed from the trees”

Carlisle nodded and turned on his pen light before moving on to check Jacob’s pupilary response

“....I got involved.”  Edward replied.

With those words Alice looks at Jasper then at Edward, who strangley is watching Carlisle work with the utmost interest.  If Edward fought with the wolves this would mean trouble, for all of them.

Esme had been in the doorway before joining them.

“Oh Edward.” she pulled him into a hug.
“I’m so glad you’re alright.”

“Thank you Esme.”  Edward replied.

“What’s all the noise and why do I smell shifter?”
They small party in the room was joined by Emmet and Rosalie.
“You mean dog don’t you?”  Rosalie replied disgust clearly on her face.

“Yes how nice to see you too Rosalie.  Thank you for your concern.”  Edward voice didn’t carry too much sarcasm.  He stopped on full sarcasm with Rosalie a long time ago.

“Edward apparently saved this young man from the shifters.  Though I have to wonder why they would attack him?  He appears to be of Native descent as well?”  Carlisle was truly puzzled by this.

“Maybe he did something to deserve it.”  Rosalie said raising one eyebrow.

Jasper could feel the tension and anger coming from Edward directed at Rosalie.  Carlisle and Emmet were both curious about this, that came of them in waves.  Alice was concerned about Edward and the boy while Esme, bless her was trying to send out waves of comfort.

“Well maybe when the shifters come for me I’ll see can I talk them into taking you.”  Edward snapped.

“You!-”  Rosalie replied.

“Rosalie, sweetie why don’t you come and help me with the groceries and leave Carlisle and Edward to work?”  Esme then turned and walked out of the room with Rosalie rolling her eyes at Edward before exiting as well.

“The weird thing is there were only four shifters their.  I was able to get names.  The biggest one who we was at the coven meeting, Sam, showed up very pissed off at them and told them to return to the reservation.”  Edward ran a hand threw his hair pulling out a small twig.

“This is odd.”  Carlisle began to pull of Jacobs track Jacket and then tore of his shirt with his hands.  Discarding them  into the trash he turned Jacob onto his back.  He could smell the blood from the wound on his shoulder before he saw it.

“Alice can you get me the antibiotics, water, gauze and tape from the cabinet?”

Alice began to pull what was needed out and set them on the silver tray next to Carlisle who began treating the wound.  It didn’t appear to be threatening but it would be sore probably for the next week.  Probably would have trouble working that area until it healed.

“Well it’s cleaned and packed nicely, thank you Alice”  Alice gave a small nod her eyes relieved.  “But he is going to have a scar.”

Carlisle continued  “His blood, he smells human but there’s something else.  Something I can’t place.  He’s obviously not a shifter.  I believe that if he was he would have changed during the fight.”

“So what is it?”  Emmet spoke again.  Jasper felt the curiosity from the bigger male growing.  He watched has Emmet placed his arms in front of his powerful chest.  Jasper noticed that during the whole time he was there Emmet had been standing in only just his boxers.  His tall and broad body casually on display for all.  Emmet gave Jasper a quick grin causing Jasper to dart his eyes back at Carlisle.

“I don’t know.  I want to take a blood sample but I don’t feel that it’s needed.  The shifters don’t carry rabies or anything like that.”

“He saved me.”  All eyes turned back to Edward.
“We fought back to back but I got distracted and he saved me.  Broke a branch against one of the wolves.”

“Ouch!”  Emmets laugh filled the small sick room.
“I would have loved to see one of the Lassies go down!”

Jasper lightly grinned while Alice just shook her head.

“Did you get his name Edward?”

“No that’s the thing.  His thoughts, they’re almost like Bella’s.  Except for a few thins here and there.  It’s like one thing comes in clear and the rest goes to static without the buzzing sound.”

“See I told you Bella was just blank.”  Emmet teased Edward nudging him a bit while Alice poked Emmet in his stomach.

Carlisle reached into the pocket of Jacobs shorts and pulled out a plain black leather wallet.  Opening it up Carlisle began pulling out two I.D’s.  Edward glanced over at them.  One was a high school I.D obviously not Forks or La Push High.  The second was a drivers licensee from the state of Hawaii.  Both I.D’s had his photo, his smile big, warm and eager. It seemed he really wasn’t from around here after all.  Edward then noticed the name.  Jacob Black.

“Black?”  Edward and Carlisle spoke at the same time.

“Could he be related to William Black?  The guy you are treating?

“I believe he is.  Billy mentioned he had two other children who did not live here in Washington.  I need to call him and tell him to come for Jacob.”

Carlisle turned and left.

“Come on kids, we need to let Jacob rest.”

Alice followed out first followed by Jasper who was staring Emmet.

Edward spoke up.

“Carlisle I want to stay for a while.”  Edward had no idea why, maybe some sense of thanks.  “Someone needs to be here when he wakes.”

Carlisle nodded and continued to walk to join the rest of the family.

Edward pulled out a chair and sat down in the corner.  The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the one window illuminating Jacob Black has he slept, injured yet peaceful.

The sterile smell of the sick room, the mix of medicines, ointments, latex, and floor cleaner making Jacobs scent a bit lighter but oh so noticeably there.  The scent still making him feel a heat in his lower regions.

Edward sat.  Edward waited.

Jacobs thoughts going from a beach to static snow and back again.
