Manresans daw are spokening dollars???

Oct 01, 2008 01:18

Well, that's what Marcus Felix (sorry for using the whole name, since I have another friend named Marcus, too) said when he was asking me about high school. Rachel Mutia and I are from Manresa and I don't speak like Rachel so I tried to remember.

Marcus reiterated with, "You guys are always hanging out in Alabang Town Center, right?" Affirmative on that.  "We always know if a girl's from Manresa from the way she speaks."

All right. Now, I remember. I used to have an American accent when I spoke English. I could also switch to British when a role (I used to act in high school plays) called for it.  I spoke with my American cousins with ease when we visited them in L.A.  But that was before I slowly got immersed in the UP culture.

By age 19, I was more fluent in swardspeak (gay language) than I ever was in Tagalog and English. Add that to the fact that I also formally studied Japanese. My tongue went haywire.  It's only when I go to my Toast of Mensa meetings that my tongue would pull back into shape. You're required to, since it's a Toastmaster's club and it's public speaking. LOL.

Other new things in Manresa, as told by Rachel:
  1. They now have video cams everywhere to prevent teenage pregnancy. Goodness. I guess this is better than what they used to do to me. I've had two nuns watch over me whenever I'm with my guy friend Mike (who was obviously in the closet, jeez!), but they'd conveniently doubt my sexual orientation whenever I'm with my best friend Cha. They're not that good judges of character, really, since I was I wallflower, who was more concerned about burying my head in a good fiction than pursuing anything of the romantic sort back then. I was always in the library, looking for those "forbidden" books.
  2. Even parents cannot go into the campus easily. Whatever happened to the family-friendly atmosphere? Those kids are going to get more screwed up, being trapped in a concentration camp like that. With everything seeming so cold and academic, it's no wonder kids make motels out of classrooms and bathrooms.
  3. Above-the-knee skirts are in, even if that's against the dress code. I was definitely born in the wrong era.  During my time (and Rachel remembers this because she could remember how high school students looked like when she was in elementary), my classmates would wear the longest skirts, preferably covering their ankles. The manang look was in. I was the only one stubborn enough to follow the "2 inches below the knee" dress code and only because I refuse to walk in something that I know I'd trip in.

I guess I'm lucky.  I did not do all sorts of mischievous stuff in high school because my parents are not only deeply devoted to their Catholic faith, they also trusted their kids.  The more trust my parents gave us, the more we were careful not to break that trust.  But if your school is as morally backwards as this, you really will have to work overtime as a parent to make sure that values do not become warped.

See what happened when I was released from this unreasonably conservative high school and into UP? I now firmly believe that I'm a gay man trapped in a woman's body. Hehehe.

UP's culture is really...i dunno how to say it. i studied in APC for four years after graduating from UP (APC for 2nd degree and master's degree) but the moment i got back to UP, i'm totally back in college and have forgotten the discipline i imbibed in APC. i even re-acquired the bad habits i threw away when i left UP (like cramming and other vices).

iba talaga. it's a totally different world. if i compare APC to manresa, they're closer pa eh. you're even required to speak english in APC, unlike in UP where you're ostracized if you preferred to be "friends with American imperialists". lol.

hehe, with my gaming group (and with my ex, who cannot speak a decent word of tagalog no matter how hard he tries), it's really english all throughout. well...it's more like geeklish, not normal english.

what i like about swardspeak, though, is that i get to invent words as i go along. hahahaha!

toast of mensa is a toastmaster's club na mensans ang nag-found. not to be confused with the active mensa society. they're changing the name na kasi when we left, hindi na mensans ang members. the last mensan there was nicco's mom.

that was what i heard. kasi i stopped being a member last year so i'm not sure if the club is still alive or has been merged with another toastmaster club.
