OAC Bike Hike: Need for Speed 2007

Jun 07, 2007 17:00

It's time to blog about the OAC Night Bike Hike: Need for Speed 2007! (Which took place between the period of last Sunday to this Monday!) Last year, the only J1s who were present consisted of Shiu Yuen, Eric and me, and of the 3 of us, only Shiu Yuen and me did the full trail (since Eric only joined in at Kallang!), and after having so much fun last year, you simply couldn't miss out this year's bike hike right? I remember last year me and Shiu Yuen came directly after class outing, so we were thoroughly shagged when we reached the end, because we had no preparation for it at all! Having learnt from the painful mistakes of last year, this year, I've given myself ample rest and stocked myself up with food before heading for the bike hike! Shiu Yuen, being the bike hike I/C, definitely did his homework, that goes without saying!

The only problem I encountered during the whole course of bike hike was at the start, when I interpreted Xinyi's SMS wrongly and thought we were suppose to meet at 7.30 pm instead of 6.30 pm! When I got to the bus stop, it was already 6.30 pm, so I had no choice but to take a cab down! Luckily the fare didn't exceed $20! It was all I had with me at that time! (Which was originally meant as payment for the Bike Hike!) Sheesh! I don't think there's a lot to talk about Bike Hike, it's really the photos that matter! Here's another photospam entry! Oh, and I couldn't really take photos along the trip, since there were still quite a substantial number of cars on the road, so I only have photos from the pit stops!

After this, the bike hike started!

From East Coast Park, we cycled to Lau Pa Sat via City Hall, which was our first pit stop! However, we chose to skip it, since no one was either really hungry or tired. There weren't any opportunities to take any photos anyway. Moreover, there were so many cars, safety's more important right? With that, we cycled through Chinatown and Outram Park to reach Tiong Bahru Park!

Leaving the park at Tiong Bahru

From Tiong Bahru, we cycled along the MRT line, passing by Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth and reaching Buona Vista. From Buona Vista, we turned into North Buona Vista road, passing by the MOE building and then met with our first major obstacle at South Buona Vista road, where it was a furious upslope! From there, we were rewarded with the 'Initial D' like downslope down the other end of South Buona Vista Road, reaching Pasir Panjang at the end of it. From there, we cycled onto Telok Blangah and then to our next stop at Vivocity!

Catching up with Shiu Yuen and Eric at Vivocity!

Our bicycles at Vivocity!

After having Mcdonalds at Vivocity, we cycled northwards via Lower Delta Road, passing by Tiong Bahru, and then onto River Valley Road. There was this gradual upslope at River Valley Road (which I didn't notice, so I kept thinking to myself whether there was something wrong with my bike) of which we all struggled across, emerging at Killiney Road and arriving finally at Orchard Road! From Orchard, we cycled pass Dhoby Ghaut into Prinsep and Selegie Road, going pass Paradiz Centre and the Bugis area into the Little India area. Travelling along Serangoon Road, we passed by Boon Keng and finally arrived at Potong Pasir!

At the Potong Pasir Kopitiam!

From Potong Pasir, we cycled into the Ubi Park area, and then across Eunos and Bedok Reservoir to reach Tampines! It's funny how we made the same mistake at this juncture last year as well; the route required us to turn to our left, but on both years, we made the same mistake of turning to the right, and then upon realising the mistake, turned around to go in the opposite direction!

The moon! (With the Tampines Ave 1 sign sticking out at the bottom!)

Argh! Overexposure! We look like we're in heaven or something ...

Yeah! Nice group photo!

Following that, we headed off for Changi Village, but along the process, we got mixed up at Tampines Avenue 7 and 9!

Our bicycles along the roadside while we clear up our directions

Stranded! (In the middle of somewhere!)

After getting our directions sorted out, we proceeded onto Loyang Avenue, which had the most killer upslope in the whole bike hike!

The killer upslope! (Doesn't look like anything here, but it's really steep!)

Parking our bikes when we had reached the top of the slope

Sherene getting there!

Yeah! Sense of accomplishment!

Oh yes, and we were rewarded with the totally exhilarating downslope on the opposite side! Changi Village was nearby, so it didn't take long before we reached there for Prata! It was around 4 am by then.

Reaching the Prata shop!

After the food, we left the place and cycled till the airport area! Along the way, we witnessed an accident which involved a taxi and a cargo carrier, with the taxi slamming into the rear of the cargo carrier. The police were there as well, quite a scene! Oh, and Marilyn, with her money-face skills, found $10 by the roadside! Right out of nowhere! After that, we kept looking at the roadside to see if we had any luck to find more money but then don't have! Ok, with that, we cycled onto the 'road that never ends' or the 'never-ending road', which is an affectionate term for Changi Coast Road! The road spans the whole runway for airplanes, so you can be sure you'll be cycling on it for a long long time! It's a pity we didn't see any planes taking off, but well, the moon was really pretty! I was cycling with Xinyi and Branden, because I needed the music from Xinyi's walkman to keep me awake. The silence there is also rather eerie, so having people around you is good! The scary thing though was how this HUGE cargo carrier suddenly blazed across the road from behind us, so both me and Xinyi got a really bad scare.

Upon reaching the end of the road, we turned into NSRCC and finally back to East Coast Park! Halfway through, we stopped at the jetty, meeting up with Han Yun, Shiu Yuen and Eric to catch the sunrise.

The moon!

The following is a series of nature photos that depicts the sunrise we got to see that day! Ok, we didn't get to see the sun due to the intensive cloud cover, but I think there are still nice pictures to share!

Eric is REALLY ECSTATIC that daytime is approaching!

I like the colours in this photo!

I think this photo feels more like a sunset than sunrise!

Nice shot of the clouds!

As the day continues to brighten ...

Really tired juniors! (Marilyn and Sherene!)

An attempt at an inspirational shot (Why is Han Yun and Xinyi smiling at the camera?!)

More inspirational ... but Shiu Yuen's face is too big!

What is Shiu Yuen doing?! (This was the last attempt at an inspirational photo!)

The lovely gradients of the sky at dawn!

Back at the starting point! (Finally!)

Giving out certificates of completion!

Thanking the auntie from Tiong Bahru YEC who had been accompanying us behind!

The rest of the photos are uploaded here.
The whole bike hike ended at 7.30 am! After that, I headed to school for the M.A.D General Meeting (you could have guessed how totally drained out I was by that time) at 9 am! Ok, though it was really tiring, but it's very fun! I think everyone in school should go for Bike Hike! Or at least go for some kind of night biking with a group of friends! It's a very good experience, not to mention very serene as well (since they're like no cars on the road in the middle of the night!) and you get to appreciate the sights and sounds of Singapore!

I guess you would agree with me that A LOT has been happening for me so far for the June Holidays! Now it's time to get down to finish up my homework and to complete my revision!
