The door closes, and all you can hear is the sound of fire and screams. The smell of burned flesh, rotting blood, and true darkness permeates everything ( Read more... )

She gags on the smell--not the blood, but the burning and she remembers and her leg aches--

She manages a breath.

Then another.

She follows.

They enter a large room, dominated by a great iron and bone throne. On it sits someone who could be related to Námo, but the blackish-green eyes belie who it is. Upon his head is the iron crown, topped with the stolen Silmarils.

Before them, bloody, broken, naked and sobbing, was Gorlim.

"You see," Ruin says as they watch the betrayal play out, "this was the moment all in him was broken. He has been tortured. He has been raped. He has been used and abused. What was once noble and glorious about him is about to die. And when death comes, it wakes in the form of Wraith."

She can't take her eyes from him.

(my dove)

She's only dimly aware of the figure with the crown as she walks to the foot of the throne and goes to lay a hand on Gorlim's bloody shoulder.

Her hand passes through him.

"We're not really here, Legs. We're seeing a memory of an event."

Gorlim says his traitorous words, condemning those who trusted him to a bloody death. And Melkor laughs. He tells Gorlim he had been trapped by a illusion of his wife, long rotting in the pits. Melkor watches as Gorlim is gutted with a black blade, eyes wide and full of tears.

"This is when Gorlim becomes what he is now. Do you see? He has betrayed all he was. And when he wakes in Milliways, Wraith will be a part of him."

It's one thing to know your friend died.

It's something else to watch it.

To her credit, she doesn't scream.

"I see," she replies, voice choked with the threat of tears.

"Do you?" he asks.

He drags her closer.

"You think I do these things because I like it?" he demands, eyes ablaze with something undefinable. "Do you think I truly enjoy what I am? I'll give you a hint Mary Anne, I don't. But dammit, I am what I am and I will be good at what I do! If he doesn't face who and what he is, recognize his sins -- truly recognize them and not force them into the wraith -- he will bring all those he loves to ruin. You will all come to me!"

She never should have come here, never agreed to this.

But she is here.

She doesn't struggle in his grip.

"You're doing this out of some twisted sense of mercy, then? Trying to redeem him?"

Her voice is oddly flat.

"Seems we're all coming to you as it is."
