"WE ALL FALL DOWN"

Sam sensed, more than heard, Dean walk up and lean against the doorjamb. He buried his face deeper into his pillow. His throat and eyes were burning from the tears he refused to let fall, especially in front of Dean.

"Sammy," Dean's voice was low and comforting. The ache in Sam's throat intensified at the sound. God, how he missed being a little boy. Being able to run to Dean for anything- everything. But things had changed now that he was growing up. Fifteen was too old to run into your older brother's arms, especially after a fight with the father he adores.

"Dean, please," Sam choked out, cursing the hitch in his voice. "Just leave me alone."

Dean sighed, walking over and sitting on the edge of the bed. "Come on, Sam." He was cajoling, trying to make Sam feel better. That was Dean, always trying to fix everything. But he couldn't fix Dad's stubbornness, and he couldn't fix Sam's, either.

Sam wanted to just crawl into a dark hole and die when a sob escaped his lips. He was shaking in an effort to try and control himself. "Why does he have to be such a jackass, Dean? Why can't he just-" Sam cut off, pressing his face harder into the cool cotton of his pillowcase.

Dean leaned back against the headboard, stretching his legs out in front of him. He reached over and began to rub Sam's back, just between his shoulder blades. Sam's tears were coming silently now, leaving warm, wet spots on his pillow. They stayed like that for long after Sam's tears had stopped. Finally Sam sat up, looking at Dean through swollen eyes. "Why?" he asked, simply.

Dean shrugged. "Because he's as stubborn as a mule and so are you. Because he just wants what he wants, and so do you."

Sam sighed deeply. Things with himself and Dad were about to come to a head; most likely, a really nasty one. He looked back at Dean. "Do you think he was right?"

Dean shrugged again, but looked away. That was Dean's code for no, I don't think he's right but I'm not going to say it out loud.

Sam flopped back against the bed, crossing his arms and pouting. "He totally hates me, dude."

Dean rolled his eyes. "No, he doesn't, Sam. You're his son, he loves you." Dean looked him up and down, taking in Sam's dramatic pose, his tear-streaked face and childish pout. "So do I, for all that you’re a freakin' girl." Dean ducked as Sam swung a pillow at his face. He quickly rolled over, on top of Sam, and pinned him to the bed.

"Get off me," Sam growled.

"Say please," Dean's smirk was smug.

"Blow me," Sam snapped, jerking his head up to hit Dean's. But Dean was quick and moved his head back just in time.

"Now, now, Sammy," Dean chastised mockingly. "That wasn't very nice." He reached down and tickled Sam's ribs until Sam was writhing beneath him, doing his best to buck Dean off.

"Okay, okay!" Sam gasped out between giggles. "Please, get off me, Dean! Please!"

Dean leaned back with a chuckle, reaching out to pull Sam upright. "And let that be a lesson to you!" he lectured, pitching his voice lower than normal. Dean climbed off the bed and walked towards the door. Apparently satisfied with Sam's emotional state.

"Dean, wait," Sam called out. Dean looked back over his shoulder, raising an eyebrow. "Thanks," Sam said.

"For what?"

"For you know, being here and stuff. I really appre-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Dean was facing Sam now, hands up in a defensive stance. "I know I called you a girl, Sammy, but come on! I don't do that touchy-feely crap." He genuinely looked like he might hurl.

Sam smiled a little. "Yeah, okay."

Dean continued his way out, muttering about chick flick moments and how he really needed to test Sam's testosterone levels.
