The difference between knowing and understanding is important to me. In this case, knowing means knowing something as an intellectual fact and understanding means fully understanding the underlining principles (or at least as much as one can) and being able to apply it. It's like the difference between hearing and listening. One means taking in information. The other one means in one ear, out the other.

Understanding is an important concept to me. You can only start to really love someone if you can begin to understand them. You can apply different theories if you understand them. Of course you can also stumble on something by accident but if you do not learn to understand what had happened, then you can only reproduce it just as you had through only that one method and not know what you are doing, how to improve it, or how to move beyond.

Non sequitur: I always liked the Buddhist belief that the mind and body are one. It's sorta the same with the Middle Way. I kinda like to relate it to Aristotle's Golden Means.
