The questions most people ask are bitterly personal. They ask if he is okay, if there is anything he needs. They ask him how he feels and how did this happen when they appeared to be so happy. What did you do? What did she do? The question he most dreads, the one invariably asked by the well intentioned and the sharks circling for blood is the very question he once asked; “Is a divorce what you truly want?”
It hurt deeply to hear the answer, to repeat it because now, after the heartache and the anger and the loss of trust, it’s what Sergio wants too.
But the question Iker asks startles him so that he laughs.
“Do you have a good lawyer?”
“Yes. Of course. We’re in negotiations right now, but everything is going smoothly.”
The proceedings were simple and quick: yes, she could keep the house and yes, the property in Cadiz, we have a more reasonable number in mind for alimony, take a look at this please. The wife he had cherished and the life he had loved dismantles before him in a series of meetings but he’s unable to call forth a flicker of emotion as they gaze at each other from across the table. It’s too easy and perhaps the ease at which they separate is a sign divorce is the right thing.
Iker doesn’t ask another question. Instead, he tells Sergio to do things. He tells Sergio to come here, twice when Sergio, so deep in thought, doesn’t hear him. He cups Sergio’s neck with his warm hands and tilts up to kiss his forehead, and then pulls him into his arms. Iker’s breathing is easy, his heartbeat is steady, strong, and comforting. Bit by bit, Sergio relaxes into his touch. They begin to sway softly, so slow neither feel the motion but Sergio feels lulled, soothed.
He tells Sergio they will make it through, together. Iker tells him that he will be okay, and Sergio exhales, a bit wet, the bitterness slowly escaping with his first tears, and he says, “I know.”
