Marked: Dedication
DedicationAs per the usual faff, the Casts open their debut tag-team novel with a dedication, since some writers feel obliged to let certain people know they inspired them- oh, how nice! The first one’s to their agent! Nice of you to name-drop the victim for my voodoo revenge.
As this is the marking of such a pivotal moment of history, I’m going to go ahead and show it you:
“For our wonderful agent, Meredith Bernstein, who said the three magic words: vampyre finishing school. We heart you!”
I am not very happy; this thing is already invoking my rage: the chosen spelling is obviously an insta-ploy to say how different and special their vampires are, which is just lazy and their trademarked inability to be subtle showing again. It’s also a nod to Byron, who inspired Polidori’s ‘The Vampyre’. Watch out! Byron’s poetry will appear later.

To continue the linguistic theme, look at that final sentence, ‘We heart you!’ I get it, this book was meant to be written for teenagers, ‘like a teenager’, hence Kristin’s involvement, but outside of the story, and in a formal dedication? These people do not know when they should be mature and professional, as will be later proved. So, here we’ll introduce the next lovely count.
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT: 1
This count is simply for when the language shows very obvious attempts to be teen-like which are, as par for course, just ham-fisted and the reason why many teenagers actually refuse to pick it up (no one wants to bring their lame dad along to any place their friends will be). I know, I just started this count outside the story, but this called for specialist help.
So far, all we have is evidence of immaturity and a ‘Vampires meet Harry Potter’ initial concept. This will be getting worse.
