We forgive or we forget, we cannot do both. Sometimes the choice is already made for us, and the responsibility falls to preserve the other.
If you would unburden yourself by forgetting the crime, do not forgive that it happened. There can be no sympathy for those who willfully invite wrongs upon themselves. We must learn to become better even as we expect others to be.
If you would unburden others by forgiveness, then do not forget. Those who open themselves to repeat their tragdies hold everyone else back. The progress is a collaborative effort, we only get through it as fast as the slowest of all. Eventually we will find the weakest links and cut them so we can move on.
So we either forgive the cruelties inflicted but not forget, or forget them and not forgive. Or be sacrificed to titilate somebody else's narrative.
