There was, unfortunately, a hefty tax on 3D goggles. Once we'd swallowed that bitter pill, Monsters vs. Aliens turned out to be a surprising amount of fun &emdash; in 3D, no less &emdash; in exchange for minimal cringing, most of which was at the extended Close Encounters theme. I'm still wondering whether Stephen Colbert got to write his own lines. The twists were rewarding, like sitting a test you know the answers on, if not actually surprising for someone over the movie's target age. I admit I was pleased that, in a break with tradition, the characters were ultimately endearing instead of immediately cute and fluffy.
Go and see it.
