In the regular event that we need to exchange files with the rest of the project in the US or test builds on an architecture difficult to procure locally, we've been noticing major slow-downs for random parts of the team. You'd think we'd have realised it before, but it just clicked for me what the problem is. For myself, and the team in the UK, home directories are transparently created on Oceanic and European servers respectively for performance reasons. The rest of the team including my supervisor (who worked in California until last year) has her home directory on the Bay area network.

So, now guess the physical locations of the servers we're connecting to.

It's no wonder trivial compilation takes hours and hours.
