I mean, certain things are considered lucky, New Years Day being indicative of the rest of your year. Having enough to eat and food leftover is desirable thing. You don't wear colours you'd normally take to funerals. Paying your bills at the restaurant is also good luck, especially if you want to eat there again. Adding money to the red envelopes and feeding them to the lions probably brings luck, although less so if you light firecrackers under the lion's tail.
