Pepa’s studio.
Gema: how much more are you gonna endure this situation with her? ---Pepa looked up from her drawing folder and put the charcoal aside. Looked at the drawing she had made of Silvia and felt emptiness in her chest. What had happened? Why Silvia had not called her? Pepa asked to herself.
Gema kept talking….
- If she hasn’t called you is because she doesn’t want to know anything about you anymore. ----and Gema kept talking while Pepa was drawing. Then Pepa looked at her.
- You don’t know what you are saying….she…she wouldn’t disappear just like that.
- Pepa, you have called her and she doesn’t answer. Sorry, but when that happens is because she doesn’t want to hear from you.
- No, dammit!!!---Gema winced. She had never seen her friend like that. And it hurt a lot that the reason was a woman that didn’t value her.
- This has to have an explanation, I know. Perhaps her husband…found out…. ----she suddenly got up from the sofa. ---What if he had done something to Silvia when he found out?
- You see, that’s what I mean. You live at the expense of what others do. How can you have a relationship like that?
- We are in love, Gema. --- The girl looked away.
- I don’t know if that’s true. ---She murmured. --- You love her, but she…
- She loves me. ---Pepa said with a grim look.
- So, why hasn’t she left her husband for you then?
- It’s complicated. --- Pepa realized that she was repeating the same words Silvia kept saying to her and she still didn’t understand what was so complicated.
- Is that what you two always say to each other? ---Gema shook her head. --- I don’t understand you guys. --- She shook her hands. Truth was that neither Pepa understood.
- I have to go see her…
- And if is true and her husband found out?
- That’s why. If she hasn’t called me is because something bad happened.
- You are getting into problems.
- I know what I’m getting into, Gemita. ---She set her eyes on the perfect picture of Silvia’s face. ---and I assure you that the last thing I want is get out of it.
- Okay, you are a grown up. ---she said in a bad mood.
It was twelve o’clock but Silvia couldn’t sleep. She put the clothes on the washing machine and poured detergent on it. The house was quiet. Well not that her home was a place of overflowing joy and life. But since Lucas was sleeping and the TV off, the house was in complete silence. She closed the lid of the washing machine and then she set her eyes on her ring. Damn. Tears burned her eyes. It was almost a week since she last spoke to Pepa. Almost a week without taking her phone calls trying to ignore her. But every time was more difficult. She didn’t want to give her any explanation. She knew it’ll be even more painful and….a knock on the window startled her. She got closer to the waiting room and moved the curtain. Pepa was looking at her with pleading eyes. She motioned her to open the door but Silvia shook her head, closing the curtain. Pepa knocked again.
Silvia a little angry left the house and took her to the back garden where nobody could see them.
Silvia: are you crazy?
- Maybe…especially considering that is been a week since we last spoke. What’s going Silvia? --- Silvia looked away.
- Sorry, I been busy.
- Busy? ---she cleared her throat.
- Pepa, you shouldn’t be here. If Lucas sees you…
- Fuck Lucas. Tell me what’s going on, does he know?
- No. ---Pepa frowned. Seeing Silvia there with her hair down and comfortable clothes, suddenly she felt the desire to hug her. She missed her so much.
Pepa: then?
- I want us to break up. --- Pepa felt her legs failing her.
- What? What are you saying Silvia?
- You heard what I said.
- But… --- she saw how Silvia looked away quickly. The words she had just spoken hurt her as well, then why would she say that?
- Pepa, don’t make it harder. Please? Just go…forget about me.
- Are you listening to yourself? What you ask me for is impossible. I love you, I love you so much, and I can’t live without you, I…. ---her voice began to break and Silvia began to lose sense of everything, she couldn’t bear seeing Pepa like that, she didn’t want to hurt her. But she knew that her father was able to hurt Pepa even more.
- Pepa is for the best.
- The best for whom?
- For both of us.
- Not for me, and I know that is not for you either. Are you gonna stay in this fucking house where you are unhappy? Let’s run away my love, let’s go away …please… - her eyes were filled with tears and she was looking at Silvia pleadingly. Silvia was about to throw herself in her arms and say “yes”, that they would run away...far from here. But Lorenzo’s face appeared tormenting her.
- I can’t run away with you. ----she said in a derogatory manner. --- What could you offer me? Nothing. You are an artist! --- What was she saying? She didn’t know, but she knew that was the only way Pepa would leave her and be happy elsewhere.
- Don’t say those things to me…Silvia…
- Well, that’s the truth. --- She said-now go and leave me alone. --- She tried to turn away before tears betrayed her, but Pepa grabbed her arm.
- Why? Why now? … I thought that…. ---again, Silvia looked away because she couldn’t bear seeing Pepa’s eyes. --- I thought that you loved me… I …
- No Pepa. I don’t love you. I lied. I never loved you. You were someone I used to warm my bed… okay? Now go, go and forget about me. ---when she looked up she was a pair of brown eyes full of anger and pain. She didn’t say a word more. She just saw her walk away, and knew she had broken her heart.
But she did all that because she loved her so much.
Silvia: forgive me, my love…forgive me… I love you…---she whispered feeling that the pain clouded her soul and tears clouded her vision.
