I'm spotty on the context but a) horrors appeal to me, I am not a good person and b) the idea of the Doctor down a dark road has always appealed to me - that's there, in him, and it takes a lot of will for a person like that not to snap. Obviously the force of what's there when he does is massive; it must be cathartic to write.
The Valeyard is actually a canonical dark side of the Doctor. He's what happens when "the ends justify the means" and "God-like" become everything to the Doctor and he starts to take over the universe. He's actually a very difficult character to write because he has to be so utterly evil, but still the Doctor.
