for theatrical_muse: What do you hope for?

"So this is what you two do, then? You just meet up every now and again and have a few drinks?" Gwen crossed her arms and looked down at the two long-coated men. The Doctor and Jack Harkness, sitting in plush leather chairs in front of a television and drinking what looked like some sort of exotic distilled concoction. Jack was changing channels. The Doctor was taking apart something that was probably an important piece of equipment at some point.

"We're bonding," the Doctor said, matter-of-factly. "Male bonding…thing, isn't that what you lot do?"

"Sometimes, depends on how many drinks we've had," Jack replied with a grin.

"Bonding," Gwen said, raising an eyebrow. There were quite a few things about the Doctor and Jack's relationship that she didn’t understand. Why did Jack admire him so much? How had they met? Were they lovers at some point? So many things she wanted to know but she had a feeling the two tight-lipped men would not tell her.

"Everyone's supposed to have the day off," Jack said, nodding at her. "Rhys is probably missing you."

"I came by to pick up some paperwork on that crystal stone we found, I didn't know there was some sort of a party going on."

"Bonding!" The Doctor said again, grinning and holding up his glass.

"And watching television," Gwen noted.

"Last time we tried playing cards," the Doctor said. "But Jack cheats, so."

"You cheat too!" Jack pointed at the Doctor.

The Doctor nodded. "So, we've opted to watching television. It's amusing, if nothing else. Is that Teletubbies? Change it, would you?"

"The words on the streets of San Francisco today is hope," the news reporter on the television said. "Crowds just finished celebrating the election of Barack Obama---"

"Oh, is that the election going on?" The Doctor sat forward and grinned. "I have to tell you, Jack, I was certain, certain he was the Master at first. Big grin, came out of nowhere, everyone trusted him. Even wrote a book! Did you read that book?"

"The one about his father?"

"No, no, the mystery. Kiss Me, Kill Me. Saxon's book! Rubbish, I don't know how he got it published. But nope, nope, this Barack is just some ordinary bloke from Hawaii."

"You follow American politics now?" Jack asked, incredulously.

"Only the important names. Washington, Lincoln, Hoover, Obama, Colbert---"

"Who?"

"Trying time for America after that election," he shook his head.

" In Los Angeles, several thousand people have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the banning of same-sex marriage. One of the signs carried by a protester proclaimed: 'Yes we can, unless you're gay.' It was reference to a slogan used by President-elect Barack Obama during his presidential campaign."

"Hard to believe what a big deal this all was back in this time," Jack said, shaking his head.

"And you get to live through it," the Doctor noted. "Well, a good halfway 'cross the world view of it. Still, no need to worry, only a few more years until change."

"That's what I said in the 50's. It'll all change in a few years."

"They'll get some old-fashioned 51st century sense soon," the Doctor agreed.

"Any idea when?" Gwen asked, peeking her head around to look at the screen.

"Shhhhhhhhh," the Doctor gestured with his glass. "Spoilers."
