for writers_muses: Enjoyment of my job and enjoyment of the circumstances...

Feb 18, 2008 11:02

“Enjoyment of my job and enjoyment of the circumstances surrounding it are two entirely different things."

To: Winifred Bambera, Brigadier, head of UNIT department, West London (wbambera@unit.gov)
From: Dr. John Smith, Medical Chief Advisor, Main UNIT Headquarters (doc_who@unit.gov)
Subject: Hiring for 2008

Hello there Winifred! Pleasure conversing with you again! How is Acelyn? Doing well, I hope? Heard you two've finally set a date, 'bout time if you ask me. Send me a note as to when you're getting married and I'll make sure not to show up and cause havoc.

I've also heard through the grapevine that Medical Officer Jason Nevilles recently retired for reasons unspecified (I heard that he suddenly inherited a large sum of money from a man he'd just met---life is really very strange, isn't it?). As it is, I have a replacement for his position that you will want to heavily consider. By "heavily consider", I of course mean "hire", because you're not really one for considering things too long, are you?

Martha Jones, MD. She's just recently acquired her medical degree and passed all of her exams. Well, she's going to, very soon. And yes, I know that you must think that I'm asking the world of you, putting such a young woman in such an important position. But I can assure you that she is the correct woman for the job.

Daleks? She's faced them. Cybermen---well, she's been lucky enough to avoid them so far, but she can face them if she has to. She's no stranger to the end of the world, Brigadier Bambera. If you think as Torchwood Cardiff 3 Director Jack Harkness does, that the 21st century truly is when it all changes, then you'll want Dr. Jones on your team.

I'll stake my reputation on it. And if that doesn't say something, I can't think what will.

I'm attaching a copy of her resume and some addendums to it that I've added. Remember that while she has not yet passed her exams, I don't hold any doubts that she will. And her resume is nowhere near as long as it should be. She has years of experience behind her, now, Brigadier. Don't let a little thing like a resume hold you back.

Best in all,

Dr. John Smith, retired Chief Medical Advisor, UNIT Headquarters, London
