Uruha watched the raindrops fall slowly onto the windshield, not even bothering to turn the windshield wipers on. He didn’t care about what was on the road anyway. The only thing he could see in his eyes was the scene earlier today. In fact, it was just an hour ago.
It was at the airport, where they said goodbye to Ruki as he boarded the plane, taking him halfway around the world to Germany. The vocalist assured Uruha that he’ll call every week, that a year can go by quicker than he thinks. How Uruha wished it would.
Who knows what Ruki would get up to there anyway? What if he falls in love with some supermodel and forgets all about his lover? Uruha was reluctant to say a word about it, but the vocalist could almost read his thoughts. “Don’t worry, Uruha. You know I love you.”
Ruki followed his sentence by placing a kiss on Uruha’s lips. The guitarist remembered kissing back, letting his tongue slip in gently between the soft petals of Ruki’s lips, kissing with more force than usual. Ruki pulled away softly, assuring him more about how they can see each other during Christmas and other breaks anyway.
None of the information reached Uruha’s brain, the only thought process in his head regretting that their kiss lasted too short. The guitarist had watched Reita, Kai, and Aoi all bid their byes as Ruki walked away.
Uruha regretted that he hadn’t applied for the student exchange program, or else he could have been on the plane along with the blond vocalist, heading off to a foreign land with so many new opportunities, just waiting to be explored.
But it was too late now. Uruha had watched the plane takeoff outside the airport, wondering if Ruki was looking out the window. For a moment, he had the urge to yell the words ‘I love you!’ out to the plane, if it wasn’t for the loud rumbles coming from the plane’s engines.
The rest of the band members were intent on bringing the guitarist with them to go eat at the new restaurant downtown, but Uruha declined the invitation. He wasn’t in the mood to eat. Besides, it had started raining then, so he decided to go home.
Uruha was glad he kept the roof enclosed on his convertible, or else the seats would have been soaked from the pouring rain. Now driving down the road, Uruha realized how empty the car felt. Usually Ruki was always sitting next to him, arguing with him over which radio station to listen to.
Uruha reached over to the buttons and clicked through some radio stations, finally settling on his favorite. The sound of Endless Rain by X Japan filled the emptiness of the car, the bass reverberating off the windows. It seemed to suit the moment, so he pressed another button to turn on the windshield wipers, relaxing back into his seat as he continued driving the car.
The sound of Toshi singing was broken as his phone started ringing loudly. Uruha tried to reach into his pocket, but his seatbelt made it harder. He tugged on the seatbelt until it loosened its grip on him, finally pulling the phone out. Flipping it open, he said “Moshi mo-”
He looked up at the road before him and swore loudly, turning the steering wheel sharply to the right to avoid hitting the car in front of him. “Shit” he swore again, forgetting he was on the phone. “Uh… you ok?” Reita asked, not aware of what was happening through the phone.
Uruha held the phone up to his ear and answered. “Yeah, I’m doing ok. Just some car almost-” His words were cut short as he pressed down the brake pedal quickly, almost hitting another car in front of him.
Before he could sigh in relief, he heard the sound of brakes screeching on the road. Turning around, he had barely a second to see the car behind him smash into his convertible. The car shook violently as the airbags deployed, the sound of glass shattering and falling onto the hard pavement.
Uruha gasped for breath, trying to push away the airbag away from his face without succeeding. He could feel himself becoming lightheaded, and he couldn’t feel his left arm.
Slowly, his vision started becoming hazy. Everything was becoming as blurry as the raindrops falling onto the windshield. Uruha could hear people yelling and shouting outside, cars halting as they approached near him, and a distant siren of a police car and possibly an ambulance.
Unable to say anything, let alone move, he felt the blood in his body demand oxygen. His lungs felt as if they were about to explode, as the airbag slowly started deflating. Coughing and choking, he finally took a breath, inhaling the smell of the rain, mingled with the sharp scent of what could only be blood.
Looking down at his arm, he saw blood running down it, his vision clouding until he could see nothing but blackness and lost consciousness.
His phone lied on the floor underneath his seat, where Reita repeatedly shouted into the phone. “Uruha? Uruha, are you there? Uru!” The sound couldn’t be heard as a crowd gathered around Uruha’s convertible, the ambulance and police cars stopping nearby as they rushed to the scene.
The sirens blared, red and white lights flashing onto the two cars. Inside the convertible, Uruha’s muscles weakened as his body went limp, his head slowly wilting down onto his shoulder. Only the raindrops stayed the same as before, pouring heavily down.

Uruha’s head throbbed, and every muscle in his body ached. Something was over his face, and the shape felt strangely like an oxygen mask. He tried to raise his left hand, but found himself unable to move it. Frustrated, he pulled his right hand over and pulled the mask away from his face.
He grimaced when the scent of linoleum and formalin reached his nostrils. Why did this place smell so much like a hospital? Groaning a little, he lifted up his head and tried to open his eyes. Or at least, he thought he tried to.
For a moment, he wondered why he couldn’t open his eyes. It’s not like there was anything blocking his vision. As his hand traveled up his face and onto his face, he could feel himself blinking, the eyelashes tickling his palm.
How come he couldn’t see anything though? All he saw was darkness, with bits of lights that seemed so far away. Wouldn’t a hospital always have their lights on, he wondered. Uruha held his hand in front of his face, to try to see if he could at least see his own hand in the darkness, like he usually could.
All it did was block up the source of light, covering his eyes with more darkness. What in the world was wrong with him? The sound of footsteps disturbed his thoughts, as Uruha realized he could also hear the humming of machines next to him. “Ah, Takashima-san. I see you have woke up” said an unfamiliar voice.
Uruha looked around confusedly, not seeing anyone, or anything. “Where am I? Why is it so dark in here? Do you think you could turn on the lights?” he asked. The unfamiliar voice sighed, appearing to be writing down something, as Uruha heard the sound of pen clicking and writing across a hard surface.
“It’s just as we feared.” The footsteps moved closer, until Uruha was sure the figure was standing next to him, even if he couldn’t see. “I’m afraid… that you have lost your ability to see” the voice said, a hint of regret in the tone.
Uruha gulped nervously as he felt himself unable to breathe. His head sank back down onto the uncomfortable pillow, as he searched for the words he tried to say. “You mean… I… I’m blind?” he asked the unknown person. The voice replied “I’m sorry to say so. You’ve received quite a bit of damage to the occipital lobe in your brain, which has damaged some of the nerves in your eye.”
His heart sank down to his stomach, and Uruha didn’t even realize he was still breathing. Blind… he can’t be blind. How can he be? This must be a horrible nightmare. Maybe he’ll close his eyes, and when he wakes up, he’ll wake up back at the airport…
Wait a minute… the airport. The car crash came back into his mind, as he felt the reality of it hit his mind. Uruha tried to move his left arm again, this time realizing he couldn’t even feel it. It was numb and heavy like a rock. The unfamiliar person, who would most likely be his doctor, cleared his throat.
“We called some of your closest contacts, and they said they wanted to come in and check on you. Would you be willing to see them right now?” the doctor asked. Uruha nodded slowly, hearing the doctor’s footsteps and the click of a doorknob. More footsteps poured into the room, the sounds accentuated with a louder click than the doctor’s.
Uruha couldn’t help but feel the smile forming on his lips. He could tell it was his bandmates, as he felt their presence around him. “Uruha!” they all said, trying not to shout but failing anyway. “We were so worried! Are you okay?” The voices overlapped each other, but he could make out which voices were Reita’s, Kai’s, and Aoi’s.
He groaned slightly as he felt his friends pulled him up into a hug, sending a jolt of pain through Uruha’s stiff muscles. They didn’t seem to notice though, and continued attacking him with questions. “Does your arm hurt?” someone asked, and Uruha realized it was Reita speaking.
“Yeah, it looks pretty bad” Kai followed, his words clearly indicating that they haven’t heard about how bad Uruha was hurt. Tears started to form in Uruha’s eyes as he remembered he couldn’t see. A hand placed itself onto Uruha’s, as he heard Aoi’s voice. “Uruha… why the tears? You’ll make it out well.”
The tears slowly trailed down Uruha’s face, onto his lips, one droplet after another. Aoi leaned over to look closely at his friend, noticing the slightly glassy look in Uruha’s eyes. The other two watched as Aoi brushed the tears away from Uruha’s cheeks. “I… I can’t….” Uruha began, unable to finish the sentence as he whimpered.
He drew in a deep breath and exhaled, letting his chest rise and fall. “I can’t see my arm.” Reita raised an eyebrow and looked at Uruha, then at his arm. Uruha continued “It’s because… I… I’m blind.” His friends gasped, and Uruha could only imagine what their faces must look like.
Aoi’s hand tightened its grip around Uruha’s, the room so silent that they could almost hear the tears trail down Uruha’s face. They were startled as the door clicked open and the doctor’s voice told them visiting hours were over. Kai and Reita said bye and promised to come back to see him tomorrow, Uruha still crying inaudibly. Aoi gave his hand a squeeze before letting go.
Instantly the room felt emptier and colder than before. Uruha sighed softly and closed his eyes, noticing sadly that there was no difference in what he could see. Every part of his body still ached and the uncomfortable hospital bed did not help, but the feeling of his hand in Aoi’s made him smile as he drifted into sleep.
