sunflowers, sunflowers!
i did field work for the first time this week end. it was cool. one of the profs in my dept is doing a project on sunflowers and he needed to get rid of the ones around his plots (and there are a lot of them!) so in we went with round up. it was in austin and it was around the mid 90s, but we had to wear long sleeves and pants so our legs and arms wouldn't get burned/attacked by thorns, stickers and bugs.
funny thing about sunflowers: did you know that most people are allergic to them. in fact this prof always gets a rash when he does field work. well little did i know until halfway through the day when i started sniffling. the allergic response wasnt so bad until we had to start pulling them. so i get this really tall one and im pulling and pulling and it wont budge. so i pull with all my might and out it comes with recoil velocity that shoots it straight into my eyes! i advise no one to EVER do this! my eyes didn't like it so much and decided to swell shut. i basically couldn't open my eyes much for the rest of the day. they were bloodshot red and on fire! i took four benedryl over the next 4 hours and slept it off.
