I'm reading a great thriller/mystery called "Slow Fire" by Ken Mercer. The main character, Will Magowan, is a former LAPD undercover detective who became a heroin addict due to his assignment and is now in recovery. He takes a job in a small town as Police Chief, and discovers that life there isn't exactly as bucolic as it was painted. There is a lot of darkness in the character, a lot of wry humor and wounded humanity.
I could so see Joe as Will. Very Vegas John. It would make an excellent TV series. And even though this is the author's debut novel, it is getting a lot of good press and there are more books planned.
Highly recommended!
Sample dialogue:
"Behind the lenses of his glasses Frank's eyes were as pink as those of a rabbit. 'Wanna know who sold me my first bag of pot?'
'Not especially.'
'Neal Cassady. And he ended up in "On the Road."'
'Thanks for the tip,' Will said. 'But I'm pretty sure the statue of limitations has already run out.'"
Can't you just hear Joe?
