Sunday morning thoughts

Found the following on my friends page this morning.

Another NOLA Vignette
Woke up this morning to two of the post-K-materialized Lower Magazine St. crack whores screaming at each other across the street from my window.  Watched as they hurled insults and gestured rudely at one another outside the B&B where tourists are currently staying.  Almost as quickly as this started, the two women gave each other a hug of reconciliation.  As they walked down river together, they started to scream and slap each other again.

It's comical and deflating all at once.

Husband and I opined that this may not be a bad place to have and raise our kids.

Kid: "Mommy, who is that person?"
Me: "Why, she is the neighborhood crack whore, sweetie."
Kid: "Is that like a cracker?"
Me: "Well, honey, some crackers are crack whores, but not all crack whores are crackers."

You think I make light and fun, but what else can I do when I hear gunshots every night and sirens every morning, and I live in the "good" part of the Lower Garden District?

I replied:

If it's any consolation, here in Albuquerque, the tourists have to contend with the crack whores and the mentally ill who roam the streets.

We live on a quiet "middle class" street, with lot's of kids. For the second night in the past two weeks, we all were entertained by the street performance of the police trying to sort out the latest domestic violence between the local dealer and the sweet teenage mother of his two year old.
I guess it's every where and it's just a different world.
The best we can hope for is to be good enough parents that it's not our kids out there.
