I need a show

I have had some great loves of various TV shows in the past. I used to finish one episode of Babylon 5 and pop another one in right after it because it was so awesome. X-files had me guessing, although I was upset to find out the only thing I guessed correctly was that the climax of the show might be too big to carry off. Many an anime show I have ( Read more... )

ach, it matches two of three of your requirements, but Deadwood is one of the best-written shows I have ever encountered.

It freaking *stops dead*, though. Just watched the last episode and was pissed off that there aren't more, but I LOVED it.

Might be worth watching if it is that good, as long as I know in advance. What was it that you liked best about it?

What did I like about it...
What *didn't* I like!
Deep, well-written characters with language so rich that I had to focus on everything they said to understand the first and second meaning.
Characters with which I fell, slowly and absolutely, in love; ESPECIALLY the women.
Somewhat historically accurate (a real place, lots of real people, some real occurences).
Costumes to die for.
Heartbreaking plot twists and humor in bizarre places.

Brilliant up and down, with favorite characters being the Doctor, Al, and Trixie. And Calamity Jane. Oh, hell, I love them all.

I will watch (almost) any star trek that's on, if that speaks to my tastes at all...

Yes, yes and yes! Agreed on all counts. Deadwood is so completely Shakespearean you would just love it, I know it. The language is exceedingly rich. It does ends abruptly, but only in the sense that there are no more episodes after three seasons of edge-of-your seat drama and continuity from episode to episode.

There's been some other cable shows with varying degrees of quality but still interesting to me, like Queer as Folk, L Word, Big Love, etc. But none of them make me giggle like Monk, which I'm almost ashamed to admit. It's a guilty pleasure! Have you checked out Battlestar Galactica or Weeds? Also fun. I loved the first season of Heroes, but I'm not caught up on the second at all, so I don't want to recommend. Yeah ... nothing like Deadwood.

HBO? Fucking cocksuckers for canceling it.

Seconded for Deadwood. Talk about a show that trusts its viewers' intelligence. You better pay attention because the machinations give new meaning to "labyrinthine."
