[He scowled at James even though he was right - years ago Severus would have just left James to die because it was no concern of his. But now? He just couldn't do it even if Lily hadn't been there.]
Because to do otherwise would have upset Lily.
[Read: The only reason I saved your sorry ass was for her.]
[Even if James didn't remember anything of his time in Ruby City, Severus could still, quite clearly, recall the beating he had taken at the hands of the other man.]
[James didn't speak to start with. He glanced up at Snape but didn't speak until he had looked down again.]
Seems like no one will tell me what I can't remember. Perhaps you could.
[Another pause.] If you will my age, I'd say you'd at least tell me the bad stuff just to rub in my face. But with you being slightly older, I don't know you at all.
[Severus gave James something between an annoyed 'huff' and a 'growl' before fixing him with a cold stare.]
You never knew me nor did you try but that is beside the point right now.
[He continued to glower down at the other man, his eyes seething with pure hatred. He hated James Potter with all his being. He HATED him. And now James had the audacity to come crawling to him, looking for help. But - his love for Lily would not allow him to do as he wished when it came to the other wizard.]
What exactly do you want to know, Potter? I am not about to give you a full recitation of your life.
[James finally stood up and faced the other wizard. Uncertainly and fear both in his eyes and his voice raised.]
Maybe I want to now! Maybe this is a sign that I don't need the past! [His voice dipped lower than normal.] Our...past.
[He sighed, his voice changing yet again to it's normal standard.] What I want to know, Snape, is what I need to get Lily to talk to me. You don't have to give me it, but I thought I'd ask. You helped me before, perhaps I thought you'd help me again. Guess I thought you might have changed.
As it is Lily you're having a problem with why don't you ask her why she isn't telling you things?
[His fists clenched, his eyes unwavering from James's - Severus was a force to be reckoned with now if James had not already picked up on that. Still, the dark wizard stayed his hand and wand as he could not bear the thought of upsetting Lily even more.]
Did you not hear anything I just said? Of course you didn't. Why did I think you would?
[Runs his hand through his hair in frustration.] Forget it. Forget it all! Don't know why I thought this was a good idea.
[Sits back down, clearly annoyed.] Feel free to leave... [He muttered as he shook his head. Snape wanted to earlier so he would now. Better that can getting into a duel he suppposed.]

(How about action? He arrives by the station to talk with him?)

[Long pause] I guess I wanted to thank you, strange as it may seem, for saving me. Not that I haven't saved your life. That's not the point.
What I'm trying to say is...Do you know what's wrong with Lily?
(Works for me.)

Insulting someone after requesting their presence is hardly endearing.
[At that Severus was almost surprised but then the last part came out and he scowled.]
A backhanded 'thank you' is an odd way to bring up Lily. As for what is wrong with her - I suggest you ask her as her business is not mine to share.

[He pushed his glasses up his nose and sighed.]
And it's not backhanded. I do mean the thanks, I just wish I knew why.
...I wish I knew a lot of things. [That last sentence was more to himself than Snape but he was sure the older man heard it all the same.]

Makes me wonder if I should.
